Comparing signals-XP Deus 2 and Minelab Manticore! Sweating in the Texas sun

Got out with Brazos today- ‪@brazosTX‬ - for some detecting in the Texas sun! Did a little signal comparison between the XP Deus 2 and the Minelab Manticore. All in all a great day!

I didn’t know that was Shells like the gas station. When I found the Millard Fillmore token. I thought it was part of a board game by a company name, Scheels I guess I read it wrong and didn’t look it up. That’s awesome that they were given them out when you got gas that makes it even better. I learned something from the video I was in with you lol.

Nive video. What were your take-aways from the comparison aspect of the two detectors?

My first take away is that I need to learn the scale on the XP better! Haha.. Beyond that I feel that the manticore is a little bit more fun to use (maybe because I know Minelab machines so well), but at the same time, I’m not 100% sure that I am getting everything. With the XP I feel like it will not miss anything I swing the coil over, you just have to listen to the chatter, and the few times I’ve used it I have dug some deep targets. Honestly, I went through such mental anguish trying to decide between the two detectors, because I was only going to buy one at first, and early feedback on the minelab made me buy the XP. After using it a couple times I didn’t think I liked it and wanted the Manticore because I knew at least I would be familiar with the general operation. Credit card to the rescue! Anyway, I think the XP is more versatile since it is waterproof to a deeper depth, and way more compact for backpack carrying, also more adaptable within the programming than the manticore… once you figure it out. The manticore does seem to be a bit jumpy on targets, but I listen to the tones, and then also look at the trace, and I realize there is actually a lot of information there to interpret, such as good targets being mixed in with bad targets, and not showing up perfectly in the middle. I generally run that machine in all metal because I don’t trust putting too much discrimination into it at this point in time because I think it will slow down my learning. Back to the XP, one thing that’s really awesome is you can just listen to the tones, move quickly, and sort out what is repeatable. I don’t have good enough settings to eliminate all the junk, but I tend to feel more confident in the signals that I do get with it. From the ‘get what you pay for’ standpoint, I’m already hearing horror stories about flooded manticores, which is the main reason I decided I wanted to get rid of my 800 back at the beginning of all this craziness-my original plan being to sell that equinox and just buy another one that had a warranty in case it got flooded. I have a distinct lack of appreciation towards minelab for their headphone set up with the Manticore. If they would have at least made it like the equinox, I would be OK because I could plug in some earbuds into a wireless module for our summer heat. As is, the headphones they supply don’t really keep out very much noise, don’t seem to have a lot of volume, are super bulky, seem a little cheap, and they’re just uncomfortable to wear in summer conditions, plus being proprietary! I don’t think anyone has found a set of wireless headphones that will work with the machine. Downsides on the Deus would be-it’s easy to misplace components that are not connected together by a wire, ask me how I know! The factory tones on the machine are something only it’s mother could love, and the lower shaft is very flexible even with a 9 inch coil. Many of the pre-loaded programs seem completely unusable in any scenario I have encountered so far, and it LOVES aluminum. The absolute customization that can be achieved with this machine, while good, is a big learning curve. However… I love both of these machines! It has never been my way to own two different detectors with dissimilar operation-that’s a lesson I learned in the goldfields. My overall intention is to learn one machine, know it very well, and keep things simple… But so far, as a choice one or the other, I still would not be able to decide! I’m entertaining the notion of just working all weekend and paying to keep them both, lol!

I know plenty of hunters that own both the 900 and the Manticore and I have not heard one of them complain about them leaking / flooding.

@@jjwilson8047 definitely! By far the feedback has been good for underwater use. But I do try to make sure that I keep track of all feedback-good and bad. I have had an Excalibur that leaked, but my 800 didn’t, so we will see I guess. Probably going to go swimming with it within the next couple weeks…

@@jjwilson8047 apparently the water enters the control box through the handle on some Manticores, that is what I heard, have not seen it though, seen loads of leaking 800’s.

Thank you! And yes, that has been my gut feeling. - that the Deus will be a better machine, especially for the type of hunting that I like most. which, sadly, I have not been able to do much of lately due to heat and work schedule. Thank you for watching!
