When I think about all of the best surgical techs I've worked with in the past thirty-plus years, some were college trained, some were military trained, and some were hospital trained. Some were NBSTSA certified, some NCCT, some had no certification. It's more about the character and work ethic of the individual than how they were trained. If I was the hiring manager, a candidate's certification status wouldn't matter to me if they checked all the other boxes. However, so many beleive that being a CST is the only way to go, I recommend getting it if you can.

Preppy has Auburn University as a partner (who also offers the online option) and got them to get the NCCT accreditation credentials this year.

That partnership with AST is sneaky. As a nurse, my CEUs total about $40 every two years. To pay $230 including the AST membership for something that's not even a license is a total rip-off.

Do your research before paying for the preppy course. I have completed it and then passed my Certification exam through American Allied Health and I have applied to so many jobs and have only gotten two offers and one of the jobs is an hour and a half away from me. To say that this was a let down and misleading is an understatement. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH. My best bet now is to take my NCCT exam in hopes that it will open up more doors but the NBSTSA is the certification that employers hold in highest regard. So it looks like even if i get the NCCT certification that it still comes second to the NBSTSA and where i'm living the NBSTSA is the only one that is accepted which is why im having so much trouble landing a job. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH

So study for the NBSTSA certification exam. I bought the book that was the Pearson's Surgical Technology Exam Review, and I studied for about 5 months and passed it. It really depends on how dedicated you are and how much time you are able to study. The book has SO much information, but it had few pictures. So many things I would google to see what it looked like, surgical positions, instruments, anatomy, and I watched many KZbin videos while preparing.

For AST I had to go to Washington DC at Howard University for the exam and recertification. It pays more to be certified and the hospitals, most of them do require it now. So go ahead and take the exam, it costs a few dollars but it will pay off for you.

AST also offers credit packages at discounted prices. I’m currently working on a credit package with all the credits needed for my next certification period for $50. It even includes the live credits required.

So, you took AAH to get the title next to your name of NRST instead of NCCT TS-C? May I ask what made you choose one over the other?

NCCT recertification fee is $89 annually. NCCT does not charge per CEU. It's a flat annual recertification fee; the CE is included.

Also, there is no membership requirement. NCCT is not a professional organization; it's an accredited certifying body only. A certificant pays the annual recertification fee to maintain a their NCCT certification, and there are no other built-in costs.

I have an TS-C with NCCT along with an AA in Surgical Technology and Understanding; And when I graduated last year I am finding it challenging to prove that my certification is legitimate and I that I went to a brick and mortar College campus along with all clinical paperwork proving that I didn’t do an online course. BUT the biggest challenge I have noticed is that hospitals rather use Travelers over hiring people directly.

@@fatirawa4830 The first thing I suggest to do. Is find out what School the online program is attached to and see if they have a physical campus nearby. Because you don’t want to start a class and when it comes time to go into the field you end up getting screwed because you don’t have clinical experience. I am not pushing you away from the online programs. Because I have met techs who have those degrees and they’ll give you the same advice. But at the end of the day You have to look at what is the best option that fits your lifestyle. Meaning if you are capable to attend a campus based program then go for it; If you are busy with work and family and taking care of yourself and you’re trying to better yourself and the only way to do so is through an online program than go for it. At the end of the day. Do some research on the program being offered and look at your current situation and make the best decision for yourself.

So, graduates of the school being advertised here are only eligible for the unknown, unrecognized, unaccredited credential. The only certification recognized by the American College of Surgeons, the Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety, or the Association of Surgical Technologists is the CST by the NBSTSA. All state laws that address surgical technologists recognize the CST. The NBSTSA is a non-profit with CSTs and other surgical professionals on the Board of Directors. More than 77,000 CSTs are certified through the NBSTSA. A person with CST certification may work in any state in the nation (a few states also require registration, but all CSTs may register). Because the CST is the only credential recognized nationwide, many traveling companies require the CST from the NBSTSA. NCCT is a family-run company. NCCA mostly validates psychometrics. NCCT certifies a few thousand surgical technologists and is not recognized by any surgical professional associations. People with the TS-C credential are prohibited by law from working in some states. AAH is not recognized by any surgical technologist law by any state in the US.

@@puppetasit’s all about experience and selling yourself. I’m currently working in surgery. My hospital requires no certification. It’s all experience, selling yourself and knowledge you can have the CST. And doctors don’t want to work with you.

Chattanooga State College has an AAH Surg AAS degree and a technical course for certification through their vocational training side. It's competitive and they only accept 24 students a year.

You do not have to earn off of your CEs through AST, you just have to submit them to AST. You can earn free ones through your hospital/employer. AST offers 3 free ones each year too.

No I have friend who finished her course with them and is doing her scrub hours at a state owned hospital in MD , is just certain jobs specify which they want I seen most want either NCCT/TS-c or NBSTA So look up if it’s worth it for your state or not

Sorry, but medcerts is not a quality program. Any online only with no in person lab time or supervised clinical is NOT a quality program.

If you are an AST member- most credits are free to process! The cost is actually $30 every 2 years. If you are at a hospital that offers 50 minute inservices or a BLS class- those should be submitted- for free. The problem is that they usually only hand them to the nurses. Start asking questions! This is not entirely accurate

If you can get into a hospital based on your experience then it will be easy to get your certification shortly after you start, NCCT certification through an online school like Preppy, is almost perfectly suited for people that have the experience but want to be certified as well.

People who wasted their time and money will tell you to get the degree so you can join them in their misery, but this is an in demand job that many hospitals even provide training on the job without a certificate or degree. If it really means that much to you that you feel the need to take 2 years worth of classes just to get something that shouldn’t take more than 6 months to a year, then by all means get the degree.

Disappointing and frankly irresponsible to see a CST supporting Preppy. Is the clinical experience supervised? Is there hands on lab practice time or are you just thrown into the OR after doing some online modules? I think the missing information in this video is what a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited program means. Accredited programs must meet minimum requirements like students practicing their skills in the lab and reaching competency before even setting foot in an OR. Then, they must scrub at least 120 cases as a student, supervised by a preceptor. Even with the critical surg tech shortages states are facing, short term online programs are NOT the way to solve the problem!! Can you honestly say you’d be fine having surgery with a medcerts or preppy trained tech in your body? 🤨

Excellent point. Even in my accredited, in-person program, our tests and homework were online, so the majority of my classmates did a lot of cheating. (I don't cheat; it's just foolish and patients suffer.) Very few of us passed the CST exam.They handled clinicals, but are not very knowledgeable.
