A drill has definitely worked better on our sands compared to broadcasting. RC Tecumseh, RC Big Rock, and Forestburg have established nicely with the herbicide applications pre plant, a mowing and another herbicide application later in the year. Even in the drought the switchgrass thrived with proper techniques.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 7 ай бұрын
Depending on the year, a drill will work better for sure! There are times the drill spacing will hurt you tho, compared to the more even spacing of broadcast thru frost seeding. The switch acts more as a smother crop when not drilled, initially. Just depends on how wet the spring is and how weeds were controlled prior to seeding.

Hilarious! Is it really a day in the woods if you don’t fall down. When hitting broadleaf with 24D do you spray it while everything still standing? Then mow it down?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 7 ай бұрын
Amen Naomi 😁 Yes...but I try to hit it when it is young in the spring...not even 10" high. So depending on how thick the weed base is there may be even enough soil exposure to plant. But I never mow unless starting more mid Summer.

Hey Jeff? What causes foxtail to be in even high quality switch
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Ай бұрын
It's not in the switch...but in the ground or nearby seed heads, typically. We have it for example in portions of our switchgrass...but not most of it. Very site specific. We take it out with Quincloric. At this point in the season you can hit a new planting with 5 ounces per acre...

Once again great video Jeff. Will be planting a bunch of switch myself this year for screening and access to stands. Working with such a small plot surrounded by flat Ag land that is usually planted with canola, my issue is having enough timber and cover once season starts up here in Northern Alberta after harvest and the fields are dirt.

Jeff, I would like to see a video on your thoughts about Ag food sources at the opposite end of a property, and plots at the other end. Ag land to the East. Plots are West, heavy conifer bush. Property is a long 100 acres of (conifer) bush to the East. Nothing but the same after plots West. Try to keep things short, hope that makes sense. Thanks
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 7 ай бұрын
Hi Tim, so many factors to consider! Generally you want the food closer to the AG tho. The food plots hold the deer until dark and then they transfer out to AG after dark. Works very well! The majority of the time that is best, but not always. Then maybe smaller hunting plots on the opposite end for daylight buck use. By keeping big food on opposite ends you limit important depth of cover availability
@timshular3983
@timshular3983 7 ай бұрын
Thanks Jeff. I was thinking from watching your videos. That would be pretty close to what you might say other than the small plots. Would be a good topic, must be more ppl in this situation, and gotta be a way to make things work. Thanks again

As long as you see switch every foot or so, I wouldn't give up! Simazine before spring greenup. Mow early May. Then 1.5 pints of 2-4D per acre in June for broadleafs. 5-7ounces of quincloric per acre for Foxtail in June...
@johnmanganello4551
@johnmanganello4551 7 ай бұрын
You will need to check the quinclorac label. It is available in more than one concentration and the application rates vary considerably.

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

😁 Thanks Mike! The deer Fence is taller than switch...but an annual. You have to beware of some off the rally tall advertised screenings out there, as they grow very tall but have zero leaves...only cane poles, at eye level. You can see right thru them. Our Deer Fence you can't see through when planted 12-15' wide. Should be around 8-10' high and very yhick
