Great episode. I'm with Vito on Generation Swine. Loved that album back in 1997 and still holds up today. It actually sounds more "authentic" Motley than anything they've done since (even though it was considered the alt-rock deviant of the Crue catalog back then). I'm almost certain that's John Corabi screaming on "Let Us Prey." No chance Vince can scream like that, and I recall Corabi being involved in the songwriting and early recording of Swine. So it's fairly certain they kept his scream at the chorus of Let Us Prey. I actually bought the Japanese import of Swine from Rock Dreams in NJ a few days before its official release. Paid like $33 for the import, which was WAY too much for a teen with a paper route income, but I was obsessed with Motley and was so excited to finally be present for a new album and the reunion of Vince to the lineup. Got the bonus track "Song To Slit Your Wrist By" on that import. As for GGG vs. Feelgood, I gotta go Feelgood. GGG is saved by one immense and classic track, "Wild Side." If you take away Wild Side, you have an over-played stripper anthem and a bunch of flat, unmemorable rock songs - ending on a throwaway cover of Jailhouse Rock. I do enjoy GGG when I'm in the mood for it, but it's so forgettable really outside the first 2 tracks. Feelgood, on the other hand, is just stacked with Motley at their songwriting peak. I could never hear Without You again and be better for it. But every other song (even Time For Change) is anywhere from an A+ to a B+ grade. Just absolute top shelf Motley.

I have always loved that album and don’t understand the hate for it. The entire album is solid and for me the worst tracks are the hits that they still play. Songs like Tonight and Fight For Your Right are amazing. Surprised you didn’t get into the Corabi album as part of the debate but that one would probably be an entire video to itself.

Everyone remembers the day they got Swine, the mood around them, and their first listen. For me, the buildup in the prior months is unmatched by any album in my musical history. I remember going at midnight to Tower Records in Portland, Oregon. There was a good-sized line of people and my friends and I waited with so much excitement. At around 11:50, someone came on the overhead and told everyone that they were going to start selling the album, and they also put the record on. By the time it was in my hands, I had heard half the record while waiting in line, and my friends and I felt like we had been punched in the gut. I gave that album the entire summer to get into it. I listened to it constantly, hoping there would be something that would click. Here we are, nearly 27 years later, and that album has built quite a history. I feel a good about of nostalgia about it, but not because it was good...but everything that was happening in my life at the time. I will never not have a place in my heart for Swine.

Great discussion. Fascinating because I disagree with both of you on most things but it shows how subjective entertainment really is. Timing is a big thing too. I loved Shout the Devil. Bought it when it first came out. My gateway to heavy metal. So when I heard Smokin in the Boys Room as the first single and bought ToP I was so disappointed. Dr. Feelgood has its moments (although I haven't listened to it in years) and Wild Side is a great track, but I hate pretty much everything else they did after Shout. Probably unfair but I held a grudge after that change in sound. I could feel differently if I became a fan later and the went back, but again, timing.

I’ve been a huge Crue fan since I was 10. I’m now 46. My personal favourite album is Shout at The Devil. It’s dark and has that metal sound. Second is TFFL and then the 94 album. I always found Feelgood was too commercial and almost too pop at times. Obviously the title track Feelgood is just saw intense and I find just that song is better than most of Girls Girls Girls album. Now , going into Swine. I rate it a 3/5. Even in 97 I wasn’t impressed. It has too many loops and computer add ons. But I’m with Vito. A Rat Like Me is the best song on the album. It’s pure Motley L.A gutter glam rock. It’s pure Hollywood sounding. The drums and bass are great in the album. Listen to it again carefully. Listen to the bass. It’s rare Nikki has a song that the bass stands out. A Rat Like Me is a true Crue song.

I love Theatre of Pain. Shout got me into them, but I love the harder edge & some of the layered keyboards on that album. Girls & Dr. Feelgood sound too clean for me. I enjoy the albums, but I think the engineer Duane Baron gave Girls too clean of a sound. But I think he's more suited for bands like Dream Theater (he mixed & engineered Images & Words). And then Bob Rock really made them sound too clean with Dr. Feelgood. They lost that raw feeling from the first 3 albums. And when it comes to Girls & Dr. Feelgood - I'll have to go with Girls. And that's because I was 17 when it came out & that was my first Crue concert - so I was hooked. Plus for me it's raunchier then Dr. Feelgood & that's what that whole LA strip was about when it came to the bands at that time.

I remember hearing the single Dr Feelgood on the radio in 1989 so headed down to my local record store to buy the album to find out it hadn't been released yet so went home with Girls Girls Girls instead. To my horror it sounded nothing like Dr Feelgood and I could only afford one album at that time as a kid so I returned the album to the store, got a refund and used the same money to preorder Dr Feelgood. I did buy Girls again later and afterca few listens it has grown on me over the years. They are both great albums but sounded very different even to a kid ack then.

Between Girls & Feelgood, you have to understand that w/ Girls they were at the highest point of drugs & drinking…..Feelgood was done when the band was fully sober so if you add those factors into play. So, Motley is a topic I am well versed on. I am actually more well versed than most I just redid my Motley ranking. Haha… Generation Swine is AWFUL. And I was very hyped with the return. Was at the press conference at the Spectrum in Philly. A Rat Like Me and Let Us Prey along with the redo of Shout are the only tracks I like. The Corabi record is my all time favorite. Of the Vince records, Theatre is my favorite. Nona is about Nikki’s grand mom. It’s fine. Jailhouse Rock. 100% because a character in the Elvis movie is named Vince and 100% because Girls, Girls, Girls is an Elvis flick. I don’t mind Jailhouse Rock, I wish they would play that live instead of Smokin’. New Tattoo is severely underrated and under appreciated and that should have been the album they returned with not Swine. It is aggravating that Nikki always shits on Theatre. Trying to remember what else you guys talked about… oh Without You, that was my wedding song. I wish they would play that more often in the set. I get Brandon but you’re right shoulda been on a Tommy solo record. Nikki singing some of Find Myself and whatever the other song was, no thanks. Yeah it's like someone said we all hear these things differently. Not being very into Motley I stand back on this I do have most of their albums but I must say alot was because I worked at a music store and bough alot every week with my check. I did love Dr Feelgood that was the album wed play in the store while working in the music store tons, and many others like GNR and countless others, but I don't view myself as a big fan, I listen to the new stuff but I quickly parted ways with Motley when things changed, Tommy Lee was mr sex tape and all that stuff. I tend to gravitate to a band I dont have to hear all their junk about or is the "popular thing" for whatever reason. Reason now that I like the first few songs I hear from Linkin Park with their new singer, to me Its a new band I was working at a music store when they came out and they were the shit everyone buying them etc.. etc... which made me not want to listen and I didnt hear and there I caught a song, but now I can approach their new work as just that, where as older fans of them feel she is committing a crime fronting that band. But everyone has their thing and I cant take away what they want just dont judge my listening.

Shout was "BY FAR" their best album. And it's not even close. Motley Crue is a lot like GNR. Made their name with one album. And everything after their best albums were much less than Shout. Their music captured a time and era. It’s of the moment in the 80’s. That’s what it was like. It doesn’t have to “age well” and be appropriate today. It’s not made today. A lot of underrated and under appreciated songs. Not a fan of their image on the album though. Girls Girls Girls - Solid album, but I agree that was a bit “ over polished.” The title track is still one of my favorite songs. Motley Crue, Generation Swine and New Tattoo all run together for me. Saints Of Los Angeles is when Motley actually lost me. I am not into that album at all.
