As someone that travels a lot, I learned the hard way that you pay the price when you try to save money on backpacks. Looking for good deals is good, common sense, but not with back packs. Go for quality over saving money.

Ugh… I hope your bag didn’t break at a very inopportune time.

@@ChrisAndEmilie It didn't break, it was just that I bought a cheap bag, and it felt cheap. The zippers were flimsy, the color of the pack faded fast, there weren't enough pockets to arrange all of my stuff. It was like driving a Geo Storm in the 90s. And the thing is, that bag is with you 24/7 when you're traveling. Spending an extra $50-60 makes all the difference in the world. It's packed away right now, I'll ask my wife if I can pull it out so I can tell you what name brand it is.

One of the few honest reviews out there. I would definitely go with the cheaper backpack. The influencer review that always makes me laugh is the one that tries to justify spending $80-$100 on a t-shirt 😳😱🤣 I believe in spending money on quality items that matter. Like good shoes.😊

Thanks for your thoughts on going with the cheaper backpack. And I get the importance of good quality shoes - especially trail runners!

Because I've done wilderness backpacking for decades, I appreciate packs that have hip belts that transfer weight to my legs, shifting the load away from my back and neck. The best travel packs have hip belts, including the carry-on size Osprey Porter 46 pack that I've now been using happily for about 15 years. Osprey has replaced the Porter 46 with other similar-looking, and comparably priced newer models. Fortunately, some of those also have hip belts.

That makes sense. We have backpacking packs with hip belts that we use for hiking trips near our home base. We used to do overseas travel with them too (especially if we were planning longer hikes), but we found all the extra straps caused airline staff to inspect our bags for size much more closely. We switched it up to give us something lower profile and lighter. Hip belts definitely give more comfort though. Glad you found a bag you love!

I've tried several carry-on bags. Hands down, I prefer the Maxpedition Fliegerduffel. YMMV, though.

That looks like a durable bag. I like all the pockets and that there is a shoulder-carry option.

There's only one GOOD choice .... Farpoint 40. Since 2015 we've traveled with the Farpoint 55's internationally .... until .... we started flying more domestic flights where we were traveling >2 weeks at a time. But these are the old type 40 & 55's. But .... what works best .... is matching the 40 with the day-pack from the 55. No offense to Osprey ..... I don't like the NEW system of either. We seem to get 2nd glances .... two people in, their 70's carrying PACKs!!!! They seem to expect roller luggage from us.

Thanks for sharing. The Osprey Farpoint bags look great!

An extra hundred dollars spread out over a year or more isn't going to make a difference. I try to spend more money on quality if it's something I will touch every day.

Thanks for sharing your perspective! I’m definitely enjoying the quality of my bag.

We are in Progreso Mx for one month then Veracruz for one month finishing up in Xtapa/Zihuatanejo for two months. Our apartment in the West End of Vancouver is empty while we do long stays travelling. I have a headless travel guitar and small amp I take apart for carry on. We use only carry on and personal item for all our travels. My carry on was found used in new condition on Craigslist. Porter brand, hard case with no lining and wheels. $100 US $ used. It was made mostly for camera gear and carefully sized for carry on. Being hard case I can’t over stretch it and it can usually fit under the seat 💺 in front of me. My avatar will take you to my channel showing my case and unpacking in Progreso.

Love that you’re getting great second-hand items! And that your full carry-on sits under the seat so you don’t have to worry about overhead bin space. Hope you have a great time in Mexico!
