There is NO DOUBT that the trucking industry and freight market got worse from February to March on a general level, and of course that outs pressure on the majority of trucking industry professionals. We saw, again, a ton of bankruptcies and layoffs this month, but is there a pattern of what is going wrong? Yes there is, let's discuss it.

Young lady, you are spot on. I’ve been in this business since 1978 and if you follow your plan, you can be very successful in trucking. We have 325 million people in the US and they all need stuff. Trucking will always be needed. We all just need to make good business decisions and not blame others for our difficulties. Once again, good for you.

What is the combined population of --India --Pakistan --Bangladesh --shall we throw in Indonesia? --How about Sub-Saharan Africa --the Caribbean -- most of South and Central America. Now, how many of those 6B people would rather be in America than in the civilizations their own grandfathers built? And to drive a tractor-trailer -- from first having the idea until being seated solo is, what, three months? Aw shucks, let's call it six. In any case, this is one of the fastest and cheapest trades to enter. There is your answer. But maybe President Jared Kushner Trump will make things all better 😅.

@@davidowen9671 You are correct that this is and always has been a very competitive industry. It is easy to enter, and many people enter it with marginal business understanding. What she has come to realize is that debt makes business much more difficult. Here are two quotes from mentors of mine: "If you don't owe money to anyone, you will never go broke." and "You can't borrow your way to prosperity." Another thing that I've learned from being in this business for 46 years is this, "learn to do your own sales and marketing." It's very easy to get on the load boards to find your loads, much harder to get out there and dig them up for yourself. I will say it again, from 46 years of experience and learning this the hard way, you have to do the hard work to be successful, but making good business decisions, and staying out of debt as much as possible, you can be successful and make money in trucking.

That ain t the case. I m a new authority and my truck is not moving for less thab 2.5$/mile. Last week I took a load from TQL for 950$, at the shipper there was another owner operator that took the same load for only 650$ and He s been in business for 8 years. I was like: well, that s why rates are what they are". The problem is that many small businesses and owner operator are deep in debt with monthly payments and cannot afford to play hardball.I was fortunate enough to be able to pay cash for truck and trailer, but I understand not many people can afford that and need to keep rolling to try to survive.

Well done as always! Freight will pick up some as we head towards summer. Like I said before, too many trucks for a bad economy. Too easy to get into this business. Too many have no clue what they’re doing. A new administration that’s pro business and pro energy independence is needed badly but until then the weeding out of the excess of trucks to freight ratio is the only thing that will improve rates.

I’ve spent the last seven years really learning the industry. Started as a company driver and now I have a third truck coming into my fleet. Thankfully I have extremely low debt two trucks are paid for. I took advice given to me and found freight several years before I had my first truck. I’m thankful for my broker and the ability to find local work to keep me going when things are slow. I refuse to get in over my head and I will only hire on owner ops with their own equipment to minimize my cost to a driver. If it takes me five years to get to five drivers I will only do it based on demand and not my desire to have more

Miranda, you are smart to focus on debt reduction. Because if you tire of the business, you can close your business without leftover debt haunting you personally for years to come from your business. Secondly, earnings are usually small and need to be steady. Debt is steady, but the cost of debt outpaces earnings. As I heard someone say one time: If you have to borrow to pay for it - you can't afford it. Keep up the good work girl!

The only positive thing that I can say is Happy Easter 🐣. Rates dropped like crazy, Massachusetts to Texas brokers are offering $2500 and the worse is that we have some people accepting that. For exemplo in NH just about every week is a load going to GA, 24.000 lbs for $1,700, someone is booking this load with 5 to 6 days prior the pickup date. This is madness, people are going absolutely in desperation without any profit to be made.

It is literally embarrassing being in the trucking industry. I have friends doing all sorts of different things and everyone seems to be moving along, growing, expanding and making something of themselves. Then I look at my situation and it's like a train wreck as if I just made all the bad choices in life and now dealing with the consequences. Im working basically 7 days a week because I repair/maintain my own truck, I do my own quickbooks and office stuff to keep the MC in good standing, I'm always tired as hell and have nothing to show for it. I feel like I am living like super basic at this point and I'm like struggling to make just enough to pay my bills and feed myself. Ive been doing this for almost 10 years and it feels like I'm starting my life again as a 20 year old kid. This is ridiculous for such an industry to get this bad. There has got to be some serious cheating of the system going on for so many carriers to still be left standing. I try to do everything right like running payroll, making estimated tax payments, all my equipment is registered and insured, and I maintain my truck to be in as good condition as possible and I am barely making it. How can I be barely making it and there are carriers out there also with truck payments and drivers to pay? Where are they getting all this extra money to be a legit business? There must be some kind of fraud going on.

Unfortunately a lot of companies are too heavy with management and will refuse to cut their huge salaries $1mil or more a year for the benefit of the business that they manage. So that's a big reason for the layoffs en masse, outsourcing to foreign countries for labor in Asia Central and South America. This is a matter of national security when you outsource tech and other jobs.. Boeing MAX is a good example of this. Has the Mcas software been developed in the US from scratch for this new plane it would've been a good chance the two plane crashes that we know of would've never happened.

I've been off the road for about almost a year by the end of May to be a complete year because I took sick with a pneumonia and a stomach virus I shot the truck down but I am ready to get back out on the road and I'm going to pretend nothing happened the rates are good and I'm going to be in total denial

1) My gross increased 27% vs. Feb. 2) Today I’ve finally paid off debt to my investor hurray! 3) Next payoff truck in three months and sell 1 trailer. That way I’ll become super optimal!

Anyone with the guts and the brains to stay in the business of being a small carrier can do it, but you may need to return your highly leveraged equipment and cancel the rental trailers. If you love this business and are determined to stay in the game, you may need to jettison the expensive "assets" (they are actually liabilities) and purchase in this market cheaper trucks and trailers that are now selling at rock bottom prices. My sense is that those that can manage higher fuel and insurance pricing in 2024-25 will have very little monthly obligations on their trucks and trailers especially those that rely on the load boards. It hurts to reorganize, but businesses do it all the time, and one might just need to hit the reset button, get overheads under control under a new LLC , and try to restart your next decade in the business with a much lower overhead and possibly running the business in areas of the country where freight is more stable and predictable eg: the Midwest.

The sad thing is One shouldn’t have to cut there expenses to a point where it’s the only way there business can stay alive. Such sad times Trucking is dead. The risk reward ratio is insane, that post Covid rush we had will never come back. At best trucking will normalize and profits will just be average at best. Many will see that as a better situation than we are in now, but ask yourself this. Labor is more expensive, parts, Ins Diesel is unstable. Drivers are less reliable. The odds are stacked against you. Wishing the best to everyone who rides this terrible wave we are on. But ask yourself this, will the tough sacrifice be worth it in the end when that sacrifice might not even end up paying off all those years struggling.

Hedge funds specialize in indebting companies and pre-planning bankruptcies, and so many of these companies borrow lots of money and cash out in planning their bankruptcies. Yes it’s illegal but hard to prove ill intent

Not with 15 Million worth of new cheap labor here. (Illegals) Not with self driving trucks and more machines and robots taking over jobs And don't forget about AI. Goodbye Jobs. And lets not forget about all of the jobs being sent overseas. Half of the country is going to be out of work.

And to drive a tractor-trailer --- from first having the idea until being seated solo --- is, what, three months? Aw shucks, let's call it six. In any case, this is one of the fastest and cheapest trades to enter. There is your answer. But maybe President Jared Kushner Trump will make things all better 😅.
