I started with Dynasty Warriors, but I've enjoyed Samurai Warriors much more. While I love both stories, the gameplay to DW was too linear for me. At the end of the day, lets just all agree that Warriors Orochi brought the best of both worlds.

i personally prefer samurai warriors because i like the characters more i really hate it that in dynasty warriors you have about 15 characters which have absolutly no personality for example zhou tai or taishi ci. story wise i also prefer samurai warriors but thats just personal prefferance. samurai warriors 2 has the best gameplay of all warriors games in my opinion so i overall prefer samurai over dynasty. i dislike warriors orochi a bit even though i played all games and had my fun with them but i have this thing that i always play the warriors game on 100% and want to make my characters as strong as possible and in warriors orochi you can make every character a god and thats just no fun for me samurai warriors 4 had something similar with the dlc weapons and i disliked the game because of that a lot more then i should. samurai warriors 2 is the shit

I agree, warriors orochi 1, 2 and 3 (I dunno about 4, I didn't played yet) are the best ones on a "bang for your buck" style, specially 1 and 2 that are on the psp, and are still good on that hardware. I just bought 3 and it itches my "I want to grind in a game" itch very hard, you complete a stage, BAM 4 character unlocked, new playstyles, new types of combos and side stories, new types of team compositions. Fun as hell. "Someone has a Gatling gun, that's not accurate" China invented gunpowder, IT'S 1000% ACCURATE!

Orochi was fun for a while but limited replayability imo. My favourite dynasty (said din-as-ty not dine-as-ty) was dynasty warriors 2, 3 extreme legends, and 4 empires. I miss the the way the battle grounds was played out.and really felt more like 2 armys standing eachother down, and the way you pick up swords and sheilds to level up your charicter to get up the difficulty levels . DW has changed so much but the graphics is prety much the only good thing to come out of it imo
@ChrisGildart4 жыл бұрын
I personally prefer the modern Warriors games, though I still love the classics. It's funny you say DW2 and DW4E are your favourites, but I find they don't have enough content to make me want to replay them.
@dragzgaming4 жыл бұрын
That is true. But I just feel they could have expanded on that in the new games but they changed more stuff with the battles such as how they act, move and basic layouts that its changed the whole experiance for me. If you look back on the old games the mini map was filled with red/blue dots to see the control of armys. Modern games just have a few troops scattered on the frontlines with a large empty space. Just as a small example.
@ChrisGildart4 жыл бұрын
I've always found there's more people in modern games. There are the odd stages that aren't filled to the brim, but the older games are similar. DW2 is probably the only one that's always filled. It also only has a handful of stages compared to the other games.

I only touched SM1 and SM2 (together with XL for both) there are a lot of groups and big factions to root for compared to the 4 kingdoms in Dynasty Warriors. I remember mostly the Oda-Toyotomi Clan, Tokugawa faction, Takeda faction, Uesugi Faction, Azai Clan and so forth

A few things I would add: The biggest factor for many people to be interested in these games, and also choosing which one to play, can also be having some prior more serious interest in one of the two historical periods depicted, and enjoying them from that perspective, having fun with seeing how they portray everyone and color the different aspects of the overall sequence of events, etc. And yeah, as you say, if someone has no knowledge of either topic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is way easier and more natural to understand the dynamics of and what is basically going on. However, if one does happen do already know a lot about the Sengoku period of Japan, the Samurai Warriors games are super engaging, just because the portrayals of all these interesting historical figures and events is so much fun to see. And I actually have a hard time enjoying the Warriors Orochi games because of this, because it's so jarring to see these characters be used in such a "for fun" way, in juxtaposition with how serious all of the events of their actual lives were... but that's just me. I find the original Samurai Warriors, despite how archaic it is compared to the rest of the series... and the very unfortunate fact that the game is essentially unplayable normally without the Extreme Legends add-on disc, which actually contains a major bugfix that makes the enemies not keep indefinitely leveling with you, which if you get how these games work, it should be clear why that is a massive problem. BUT, if you play it from the start with that add-on, not only does it have by far the darkest and most down-to-earth/realistic cutscenes and general storytelling of the series (while I absolutely love how colorful and awesome looking SW2 is, there is still some trade-off going on with some of the groundedness of the first game being lost along the way), it is also the only game, at least that I know of, in the entire Musou series, that has actual multiple possible outcomes for every battle, which are completely decided by your actions on the battlefield; these are vastly more significant than the various optional objectives that exist in most of the other games, in that they are the only way to see completely different story paths and possibilities, are sometimes genuinely challenging and require serious commitment and thought on the player's part to succeed at, and are usually communicated just through character dialogue... it makes it feel like you are really participating in a high-stakes battle where history can be changed with a few swift but very risky decisions, like what you do and how well you fight *really matters* in a way that just isn't there in the later games with their cleaner and simpler and almost always easy to complete optional objectives. All of this together makes it really stand out to me, and while the basic broken nature of the game without the add-on disc is a super fair reason for anyone to not play it or not care for it, if you can ignore that and ignore its age, it is actually a rather special game in the context of the rest of the series. And finally, while I've heard the same opinion many times, I really don't understand why Dynasty Warriors 5 is so generally disregarded. Now, I came into the series partway through, so I played them in a weird order, starting with 5 and then playing 3 and 4. And honestly 5 just seems like a better looking, more evolved version of 3. 4 has its own whole unique thing going on with the story mode, so it's kinda apples and oranges comparing that one to the others for me, but isn't 5 just doing everything that made 3 fun but with better graphics and a smoother difficulty balance and whatever little QOL stuff they had figured out by that point...? I have to assume that it is disregarded actually because of this? That everyone who played 3, and then 4, found 5 to be kind of disappointing in that it wasn't doing something completely new like 4, but was just like minor upgrades to the formula of 3 and better graphics but nothing to be that excited about? Cause it really doesn't make sense to me otherwise.

Current Favorite warriors game to date - Dynasty Warriors 8. Why - I grew up in early middle school when I came across my first Warriors franchise game: Dynasty Warriors 6 (PS3 Version) I played it very often and and about two years of battle I went out and bought a PS2 and bought Dynasty Warriors 4 and 5 as well. From that point on I was officially hooked. Later on in life I came across Warriors Orochi 1 and 2 and played those too, in my opinion personal their not as good as the core number based Dynasty Warriors titles but their still fun. A close best friend of mine suprised me with a C.I.P. copy of the original Dynasty Warriors 1 for the original PlayStation. (That's easily my favorite fighting game for PS1 ) When the Wii U was realsed what was one of the first games I bought?...Warriors Orochi 3 HYPER. (played that for about 3 straight years maybe longer) But when I finally got my hands on a replacement PS3 I bought Dynasty Warriors 8 immediately. And It's by far my favorite installment thus far. Since I own a PlayStation 4 (PRO) I'm planning on purchasing Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires when I have the time and will play that to get my Hack&Slash fix until the all new Dynasty Warriors 9 is finally officially released. The Kingdom I proudly stand by is the kingdom of WEI while my favorite playable officer is - Cao Cao.

JadeStep 96 That is an awesome story, my friend. My favorite Dynasty is Wei as well. Xiahou Dun is my favorite character. Have you had a chance to try out any of the spin off games like Hyrule Warriors, One Piece: Pirate Warriors, Berserk and the Band of the Hawk, etc? I personally couldn't put Berserk down and Hyrule Warriors was exceptionally good too.
@jadestep96247 жыл бұрын
(This is the first time ever that a content creator has actually responded to my feedback. I'm honored) To be perfectly honest, besides Sengoku Basara I haven't really had much interest with the spin offs and/or other games. Now this is simply my opinion: "I've always found Sengoku Basara a better IP then Samurai Musou." About Hyrule warriors, simply put I rented the game and found it as a disappointment. The in game content was very lacking compared to most Musou titles and a huge amount of it either was DLC or arrived at a very delayed time. I never cared much for the Legend of Zelda to begin with but I thought why not just try it out. I've been bashed on a lot for this idea of mine that for some reason a lot of people tend to dislike or downright hate. but I have always been a Castlevania fan for many years and I am a fan of the old school classic Castlevania enteries and also the newer variations as well. (Mirror of Fate being my personal favorite) I think you might know where I'm going with this but I have always wanted KOEI and the rest of the Musou partners and development team to make an offer with KONAMI and develop and Castlevania hack and slash game. Simon, Alucard, Julius, Leon, Richter, Sophya, Yoko, Cornell, Grant, Death, Carmiliya, Soma, Gabriel AKA origin of the Lord of darkness and the rest of the diverse roster of the series' cast. (Trevor is my favorite while the exclusive character Aeon is a close second)
@ChrisGildart7 жыл бұрын
That would be awesome! I honestly don't think Konami would do that. Considering what Konami has been doing the last few years, but hopefully they get their act together and release a new Castlevania. Good video. DW2 was my first game, open field battle feel was so great. My first choice was Xiahou Dun and he basically made me fan of Wei. Fourth game actually made me big fan of the series. I even started to explore real historical events and still Wei impressed me the most. People claims its same game over and over but it's a stupid claim. There is a vast difference between PS2 era and new era titles. On the other hand, I discovered SW much later. First game is not that good, it looks like didn't decide being DW clone or different thing. Second game is a vast improvement and created its own identity. Didn't played third game but fouth game is incredible. They improved storyline perfectly. I can say storyline is better than DW. I equally love both series and really happy seeing Berserk and Arslan spin offs. It turned its own genre, hope we see more musou games like them.

+nemesis3587 Glad you enjoyed the video! Xiahou Dun is my favourite character and, of course, I'm a Wei man. My first game was DW3XL, but I was able to play Samurai Warriors when it was released. I also didn't get to play SW3 for the longest time because it was exclusive to the Wii in the west. But I agree SW4 is great and the spin offs are just as fun. Have you tried other games from other developers like Sengoku Basara and Drakengard?
@nemesis35877 жыл бұрын
I played Sengoku Basara games, even watched anime serie, it's not a bad serie but to be honest I didn't get same feeling. It's more like an old Capcom beat em up, defeat every obstacles then beat the boss. I prefer SW's openfield battle feeling. And definetely prefer SW's desings, some of them okay, some of them are inferior like Akechi Mitsuhide and Kotoro Fuma, some of them are just bad, seriously what they did Uesugi Kenshin? Mecha Honda Tadakatsu, wth? And my favorite Sengoku era character Hattori Hanzo is not in that game. Never understand why some people bashes SW and praises SB. Maybe people likes its anime look.
@ChrisGildart7 жыл бұрын
+nemesis3587 yeah, some of their choices in character design is questionable. But Sengoku Basara is good when SW just isn't doing it for you. I'm hoping to do a video on Musou like games in the future, so maybe I'll have some suggestions for you to try.

I've always found the story of Dynasty Warriors more straight forward and easier to follow. Samurai Warriors is kinda like the Game of Thrones novels where there's so many different clans and families that you need to follow... it's not bad by any means, but it is harder to follow everything at once.
@weightycarlos5 жыл бұрын

I put so many hours into SW2 on 360 and I'm still playing to too in order to max out everything. Though my favourite kinda sways around the franchise, that's definitely not a bad pick. (P.S. you are absolutely right!)
@marloges6 жыл бұрын
This is coming a bit late but I kind of want to adress that the DW story isn't THAT simplistic. Sure, later on there are only three kingdoms left, but until you get there, there are quite a few different factions and if you really want to understand every motivation and relevant name, then it's going to be quite complex imo. Though the basic storyline is not that hard to understand for sure. That being said, I really liked the video. As a DW fan and Musou enthusiast I always felt like I had to catch up on Samurai Warriors since I was almost exclusively playing DW and some other spin-offs like Orochi. The rush mechanic sounds pretty awesome, wish they'd included it in DW9 :/ Any chance you're talking about that one in the future btw.?
@ChrisGildart6 жыл бұрын
I literally just finished the script for DW9. Im not sure when it will be uploaded, though. I'm hoping I can get the recording and editing done in time for the March 15 upload, but if not, it'll be April 15 before the second annual Musou May. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. There are a ton of spin-off titles as well as clones you could try out as well if you want more Warriors style goodness. Like Berserk, One Piece, Gundam, and clones like Sengoku Basara, Ninety-Nine Nights, and Senran Kagura. I'll probably give a good review of them in the future.
@marloges6 жыл бұрын
Awesome, looking forward to that :) Kinda have mixed feelings about the game personally, so I'm curious to see what a hardcore fan has to say about it. I tried First of the North Star, One Piece and Arslan, but I really need to play a Gundam game, another One Piece game (apparantly the first one is the worst), Hyrule Warriors and Berserk... A lot to catch up on.
@ChrisGildart6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there are a ton of spin-offs. I quite enjoy the third One Piece myself. Haven't played the second one though. Hyrule Warriors is one of the best spin-off titles and I can't wait for it to come to the Switch.

As a guy who grew up with samurai warriors and also Japanese interest in like reading books of them and also depicting them, I assume that I treasure the Japan history a lot more than anything else in this world and my life. That being said, I only grown more affectionate to my samurai warriors and dynasty warriors to be has been overly exaggerated for the past games. That being said, sw2 is by far my favourite of all time and still cannot find a copy to get as I’m in uk. I’m 20 yrs old and I’m a history head of Japan samurai. I’m also buying the samurai warriors 5 premium edition that includes them Crystal art laminated characters to put in display. Not very appealing but to me, I would do anything to show respect and loyalty to the samurai warriors series until the very end!

Hey thanks for the video, there's definitely more to these games than i thought. I have one question, whats the difference between "Dynasty Warriors" and "Dynasty Warriors Empires"?
@ChrisGildart7 жыл бұрын
+Talon Td The Empires spin-offs are more like build your own stories. You can create a character or take one of the already established characters and conquer China. There are various scenarios for you to start in that are all based on points in thr Three Kingdoms history, as well as one free for all kind of mode. The vanilla Dynasty Warriors is more rooted in the story. You either follow a character's story or a Dynasty's story dependong on which title your playing. This is more straight forward than Empires and if youre new to the series I recommend a vanilla game before you try out the Empires versions. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
@talontd37277 жыл бұрын
Chris Gildart I appreciate the response. Im about to sub after this comment. Also anothet question. Do you know if DW9 will have an empire mode? I really enjoy making my own officers and scenarios.
@ChrisGildart7 жыл бұрын
+Talon Td I don't think it will just because of the open world gameplay. Itd be difficult to translate the tactical elements from the Empires series into an open world title. And I havent heard anything about creating your own character for DW9. But who knows, they could have already thought about Empires and customers characters. They just haven't said anything about either.

+Seth Saxon The DLC costumes are carried over and I think there might be a couple extra for 4-II. Sadly, save file is not. The leveling system is slightly different and the story is also done differently. +Trolling time! SW4-II isn't a sequel to SW4. It's actually a more refined game with different movies and only slightly different mechanics. I played a lot of SW4 and the story is great. From what ive played of SW4-II the story isn't quite as broad as SW4. So it really depends on what youre looking for. Personally I'd only recommend SW4 because that's the one I've played the most.

What Im asking is that if this game (SW4-II) is just an update of SW4: the same game but with more content and improvements, or does SW4 have something that SW4-II doesn´t? For example Tomb raider and Tomb raider definitive edition, or Ninja gaiden 3 and Ninja gaiden Razor's edge, Devil may cry 3 and Devil may cry Special edition... etc. These games are just the same game but with "a new hat"... is this the case of SW4-II??
@ChrisGildart7 жыл бұрын
+Trolling time! SW4-II is an updated version of SW4 in mechanics only. You have a skill tree which is where you get activatable abilities where in vanilla you get items to equip that do the same thing. The story modes are both different and SW4-II adds one new character. There is no Custom Character mode in SW4-II and you can't load the vanilla save up to SW4-II. All in all I'd say they are the same game, but different executions of that game rather than an update. It's really hard to describe, but they are different enough from each other.

As always Chris, an amazing video. 👌 I love both equally, I remember back when I was a kid & I could feel that slight stagnation setting in where Dynasty Warriors was concerned, "I still loved it" but then Samurai Warriors came out & once again, the simple yet addicting formula dragged me back in & I was once again hooked. The battle between the better combat system "at the moment" I'd say Samurai Warriors wears the crown. The hyper attacks changed the entire tempo of battles, which were showcased beautifully in Sanada Maru. The story on the other hand will "for me" go to Dynasty Warriors. (I love the ROTK story) 😊

Every now and then I have to turn to a different game because the grinding to get the various platinums gets a little stale, but then games like Arslan and Berserk come out and reinvigorate me to get back into the gameplay. I am both hopeful and concerned about Dynasty Warriors 9 and holding back on making a video for it until more info comes out.

The only downfall of this series is usually the faltering scripts. Koei tends to miss the mark on specific story/character-related details even in WO and Warriors All-Stars. One thing is that they considered "the DoA characters are from another world", when in reality, they're mainly from a future version of Japan. Ayane was the only one to lampshade Yoshitsune's historical relevance in a camp conversation. And in All-Stars, both Ryuu and Ayane don't bat an eye when they hear William say that "he comes from a land called Japan". Did they instantly assume he's Japanese like them, or did they forget their own homeland? Not to mention William switches between the pinyin and on'yomi rendering of Lü Bu's name (from Lü Bu to Ryo Fu) all while speaking English each time. And certain character team comps in the story of WO overall don't make sense. WO4 and DW9 was just the start of a slew of other problems that added up.
