It seems like the "finalized" sprites were realized in yellow. Keep in mind though when they designed the original sprites, they did it in game with pixel art. There was no concept drawings they used as a base to then put them in the game.

personally, i prefer red and blue sprites over yellow, cause trainer, pokemon and overworld sprites clearly follow the same vision and are revisions of the clunky red and green ones. yellow sprites are closer to the anime, but they just stick out to me, don't blend well with the overworld and backsprites, which are still identical to red/blue and just don't feel right. the shading also seems lazier

So basically, Red and Blue are what happens when you try to draw without reference images.

Yeah, that's why Red/Blue and especially the original Japanese Red/Green sprites look bad.
One of the trends I've noticed is that while the Yellow sprites are generally more correct looking, the poses are a lot less interesting. The sprites from Red, Green, and Blue have a lot more personality, and I think that the exaggerated proportions are actually to their credit. The shading is also a lot better in RBG. Mind you, there are exceptions.

Yup, Gyarados, Lapras, Persian, Rhydon and Blastoise, to name a few, look so much more badass with their new poses in Pokémon Yellow version than in previous versions
