EXCELLENT!, an extremely enjoyable and thought provoking story narrated at a high level. The premise of this story is 55 years too early, otherwise I would've thought it was the final novel, or death knell of the "Culture", in Ian M Banks series of books. Anyone else recognise the alternate outcome of super intelligences? Banks' idea that given a super intelligence, humanity would become hedonistic hippies in a post scarcity universe with this level of support, while Stecher's idea is that these super intelligences, supplying all our wants and needs, would be regressive and turn civilisation inward more along the lines of the human "cattle" in HG Wells' "The Time Machine". Put these three stories with the "Terminator" outcome - man is exterminated by the machine - and we have all possible outcomes of our foray into AI and AGI that is being discussed today. I love it when SF probes the future of mankind and how our civilisation will adapt or die. . Comments anyone?

interesting story. 🌹🌹Spoilers i wonder how the people would react to the death. i think they’d ask the machine. and i don’t think the makers would create a computer that would be “stupid” enough to be fooled by one person trying to take it over. that makes no sense whatsoever. i would hope he would ask how to maneuver the ship by himself.
