Insane to think that Tommi finished 3rd in championship with that car and those pains. Absolute legend.

I think that's also because the top 4 basically refused to score points at the final 4 events. Prior to Wales Richard scored 8 points, Carlos 3 and Tommi and Colin 1 and 2 respectively.

CP9A 1998 - 2000 was the best years for mitsubishi under Makinen. Sad to see him go. Once they moved the platform to the cedia it was lights out for me. I wish I never got rid of my Evo 5
@pedrolmaldonado15544 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the Upload. That car made Makinen to change team to Subaru. I think that the mayor flaw of the car was to use WRC Specs suspension but if we see the engine is basically the one of the Group A engine era. The Lancer WRC04 & WRC05 the engine bay looks more proper to a WRC Spec Car
@kiweeltyler35863 жыл бұрын
What about the engine bay made it not wrc spec?
@pedrolmaldonado15543 жыл бұрын
@@kiweeltyler3586 if you compare the engine bay of the Group A Lancer Evo 6 TME, Lancer Evolution 7 WRC and the Lancer WRC04/05 the Evo 6 and 7 will have the same engine bay and design, compared to newer Lancer WRC. When the Lancer WRC04 the car design was on the limit of the regulations

@@pedrolmaldonado1554 That whole car was underdeveloped, also Ralliart would have had to make up 3-4 years of experiance compared to Subaru, Ford, Peugeot, etc. As far as similarities go, the Evo WRC was basically the same as the 6.5, with the transmission being the biggest hindrance of the car. It also didn't help that they went with a bigger car when basically every other team went for smaller ones...

What baffles me is that, even though Makinen had a pretty decent lead of the championship, Mitsubishi thought a new car was nesacerry. Maybe it was pressure from the FIA to have a WRC spec car, or maybe Mitsubishi wanted to showcase their facelifted car, or perhaps a combination of the two. This is a sport, not a 3 day long ad break, and people who make poor desicions like this will be punished. Makinen had the title in the bag if he used the old car, thanks to McRae's catahstrof**k at the Rally Australia (not being in on time to choose road position as championship leader). Granted, the Gr.A car wasn't the fastest, but Tommi took advantage of tricky rallies like Monaco and Kenya and Portugal to give him a big lead. There wasn't any more rallies that were very slippy or car breakers, but surely the old car wouldv'e gotten the 4 points Tommi needed to win.
@marfrandema18842 жыл бұрын
Yes there was a lot of pressure coming from the FIA but still i wouldn't have let the car race without knowing it's true potential being a team principal. It was stupid...I'm amazed they didn't find these problems during testing
@gigadonis86842 жыл бұрын
@@marfrandema1884 I think 2001 was basically the beginning of the downfall for Mitsubishi as a whole. With the ending of the FTO coupe a year before, the only two cars left to get excited about were the Eclipse and the Lancer Evo. Of course, the Pajero was succsesful in Dakar, especially with Hiroshi Masuoka behind the wheel, but no victories came after 2007. Meanwhile in WRC the factory team never recovered from the awful Lancer WRC (The 05 model looks sick though) and I think only managed one podium with an excellent drive from Hari Rovanpera, often overshadowed by the equally as good McRae drive. The Eclipse ended the dawn of the 2nd decade of the millena, and now they just churn out millions of crossovers :( would the Mitsubishi of 1996 bow down to the FIA like it did in 2001. Probably not. The horrible Lancer WRC made Tommi, the man that practically carried the entire Mitsubishi brand (Mitsubishi built cars especially for Makinen with his aggresive left foot braking style, which explains why only a driver of Richard Burn's quality could even get close to him) and it was probably the only way they knew how to build cars. A bit like the situation Red Bull F1 find themselves in. If Verstappen was to leave tommorow, they'd be f***d, since they build the cars for him. Overall they are dying a slow and painful death, as I can't imagine a reason why Renault would continue to financially support them.

@@gigadonis8684 I wish well to Mitsu but the last decade was a DISASTER for them...they lost the evo, ralliart, etc. But there are some slightly positive news cause they want to go back racing (likely dakar) and they are bringing back ralliart. Sadly no more sports cars as they can't afford them... To me it looks as if the old CEO was the reason behind the brand current disastrous state.
@gigadonis86842 жыл бұрын
@@marfrandema1884 I guess there is hope... However to enter WRC (or almost any rally category for that matter) they would need an entirely new car. Their only chance before was the Space Star (very good car on DiRT Rally 2.0 btw) but they dropped it. Dakar could be cool though (they have literally 4 SUV's to choose from lmao), shame it doesn't actually go to Dakar anymore.
