No matter what comes up in my recording workflow you are already ahead of me with another brilliant video like this. I recorded my guitarist using multi takes to refine a solo and hey presto, this morning, one search in KZbin and there you are again Kenny with the perfect next step video to explain comping in Reaper. You are the gift that just keeps on giving. Thank you.

Thanks Kenny! I started on a 2 track Teac cassette recorder, migrated to a Tascam 144, Portastudio w/DBX, Roland VS-840, Audacity, Adobe Audition, Presonus Studio One Pro, and finally Reaper when the lack of instruction (that I could find) for Presonus lost me. It was your videos in particular that convinced me to make the leap to Reaper. Consistent, concise, detailed and always teach me what I need to know when I need to know it. On to recording some guitar parts this afternoon - this TAKE instruction will make it SO much easier for these old clinker-prone hands! I've been using Reaper with minimal instruction to do a few tunes - it's operation intuitive enough and similar enough to what I've used before. This makes it even easier! Again, THANKS and WELL DONE!

This is exactly what I needed to see right now. You must be psychic, Kenny. Have been cropping to the active takes as I go, but I see much more scope with this method - Particularly putting the selected comps in top lane option. Genius! Thank you, my man, and keep on doing what you're doing ;-)

Some settings should be mentioned. When I try this, all takes have the same color. There is no "take n out of 3" indication. The active take is not highlighted. The shortcuts are not active (grey in the right click menu). When I split one take, one part jumps to a random lane.

Thanks Kenny! Appreciate the work to constantly put these out for us. I have a minor tweak / suggestion... would it be possible to play slight variations between takes, so it is more obvious which take you are editing or comping? The playing examples all sound the exact same to me... so I think it would be helpful in illustrating which Take you are pulling from. Even though we can see what you are doing and understand what you are saying. I still think it would be helpful for illustration purposes. Just a thought.

I must have changed a setting so that I can't click within the item to split without the cursor. And the behavior of splitting items in other tracks is annoying. I found a workaround that's better for me, anyway. That is to split selection. It actually saves a step and if your track items only are selected, then that's all that gets split. Keyboard shortcut is shift-S.

there's a problem, you used the same guitar recording for each take in your example. in the real world of audio editing, you will have different recordings with issues such as crackling due to abrupt changes in amplitude. i bring this up because i was looking for an answer on how you specifically handles fades and cross fades, or cutting at zero crossings
