FIFA and premier league regulations set a maximum contract length of 5 years, the only way you can get over 5 years is to have extension options, for example you can have a player sign a 5 year contract with an optional extension of 3 years. Chelsea's American owners are giving players contracts that are almost double the normal contract length in football, the length of those contracts is comparable to those in the MLB. Does it make sense now?

It's really not difficult to understand. Chelsea haven't been paid by Athleti, that's why Gallagher has been recalled. He needs to be sold as that money will fund Osimhen's ammortized transfer. Once he's sold, and Lakaka is loaned out, Chelsea will have the transfer money to buy Osimhen, and the wages freed up to afford his salary.
