This VW Amarok is an incredibly specced vehicle, which recieves only the best treatment from its owner, even having PPF applied by @Topaz Detailing to keep it in excellent condition on the road. However, while this truck has lots of factory options, Volkswagen don't offer an upgraded audio system in the Amarok, so the owner has brought it in to us to get it sounding incredible.
From the factory, the Amarok is fitted with a 2-way front end comprising of a tweeter in each A-Pillar, and a driver in each front door, and also a "co-axial" speaker in each rear door. These are not true co-axial speakers, as they actually just use a secondary cone to simulate higher frequencies. This is all powered directly from the head unit, with no dedicated amplifier or subwoofer fitted.
We'll be sharing a full Sound Off comparison video on the VW Amarok to show you exactly what you really get from the factory, vs the components we are upgrading this truck with!
To upgrade the system, we are fitting the Hertz Mille Legend tweeters into a stock location in the A-Pillars, utilising a 3D-Printed housing to replicate the factory tweeter mounting plate, and Hertz Mille Legend drivers going into a stock location within the front doors. The Hertz Mille Legend set are the highest range from Hertz, and offer a lot of power but also a lot of mid-bass from the drivers.
In the rear doors, the Hertz Centro Co-Axial speakers are being fitted - these are true co-axial's, with a tweeter built into the speaker, operating seperately to the main driver. This will give a lot of rear fill, while also producing a much clearer sound with the dedicated components.
To add in a big boost of bass to the cabin, the Eton 10" Active compact sub is being fitted behind the rear seats, bonded directly to the bulk head. As bass is a non-directional sound, this can be placed anywhere in the vehicle, and - as long as it is mounted correctly - will transfer bass throughout the cabin. The compact size of the Eton 10" is perfect for this build, as it takes up minimal space behind the seats, requiring no alteration to any factory mounting points or fittings.
The Eton 10" sub also has active amplification, which means it can be connected directly to the Amplifier powering the speakers to make use of processing capabilities. For this system, we are using the Audison Forza 8.9bit amplifier, which is a compact class D amplifier offering 85watts per channel across all 8 channels. These are running the system fully active, with the tweeters and rear co-axials taking a channel each, and the front drivers running bridged to utilise 2 channels worth of power for each speaker, for as much kick and volume as possible. The .9 indicates the 9 channels of processing power, which allows us to tune the entire system to make the speakers and sub sound absolutely perfect in this cabin.
To ensure the sound system works at its absolute best, the Amarok is also being fully soundproofed to creat the best possible acoustic environment in the truck. Using the Skinz 3mm layer, we are soundproofing the doors, floor, rear bulkhead, roof and even under the bonnet. All this combined makes a huge difference to the environment surrounding the speakers within which air travels, but also helps eliminate rattles and resonations, and hugely reduces road noise, all ensuring the can appreciate music at its best!
