We have no idea how to handle the violin. I decided to subscribe before you were done with how to hold the bow. If you spend this much time explaining this one thing, I can see you as a capable teacher. I will be learning violin along with my daughter.

Hey George. I have been a guitarist for several years and am very interested in adding fiddle to my abilities, especially to generate new neural pathways! @George Jackson I've been a guitarist for 30 years, and the mechanics are so very different. I really have to work on muscle groups I can usually ignore with guitar, and change my grip on the bow naturally (instead of knuckle-dragging the heel like a pick in a muted grip) The wiper stretch alone was like unlocking a new skill! Thanks much!

Great video, just good for a complete newby like me. Please do correct me if I'm wrong, but two things I learned before watching this video which I think are worth mentioning: 1) Remember to use rosin or else the bow won´t make a sound :) If the rosin is shinny, use some sand paper to break it before using, it should release powder as you apply it to the bow. 2) Bow pressure on the strings should be minimal, or else sound will be horrible

Hello George. I was wondering if you could make a recommendation for my first violin. I’m an adult beginner. I don’t have a lot of music shops in my area that specialize in violins, and some don’t sell them at all. I’m reluctant to order anything from Amazon as I’ve heard a lot of horror stories. I can spend up to about $1000.00 maybe $1200.00 at a stretch. Any thoughts on what might be some good choices? Do I need to spend this much as a a beginner? Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
@GeorgeJacksonMusic2 жыл бұрын
This is a tough question. First of all you should be able to find a pretty good first violin for your price point, maybe try contacting a shop that specializes in violins and talk to them. A good example would be “the violin shop” in Nashville, maybe you can arrange to buy one of their beginner models from afar. Good luck!

Love, I think you are starting too quickly for me. How about we set the bridge and tune the strings first? I have never touched a violin before. I already had the D string peg break in my fingers and I broke the G string by tuning too tightly, I guess. I tried to rosin up the bow….do I have too much rosin? Too little? How do I tell? All I know is I sound worse that a herd of hoarse, dying frogs. I could play my recorder/trombone/tuba/baritone when I first picked it up better than I can this thing. I am not yet frustrated, just incredibly new and I keep playing the E string along with the A string when I only want an A sound. How much pressure do we use when bowing? My violin seems to make a noise better and clearer when I just rest the bow on the strings and pull rather than pushing down on the string and pulling.
