Pepe smith that’s a good point. I don’t know how many movies I’ve watch or placed on my to be watch list because of a collector spoke about and made it enticing, rather than just list as a movie they liked or recommend.
@MeaRequies4 жыл бұрын
These types of videos are great at introducing new films that I maybe wouldn't have discovered otherwise. I also very much like to hear peoples reason to buy and watch certain films, regardless of it simply being because "the cover looked interesting" or if it was a more thoughtful decision. I agree with you Michael, sharing some thoughts about a film really help it seem more enticing, rather than just list each title in a collection

Elliot, 2 questions. What is that Third Man box set on the top left shelf? Is that the Studio Canal 4K restoration, but with an extra book or something? Also, I spotted Eureka 191 “No Way Out”. Have you ever watched that? I believe that it is one of the best movies ever to promote the vision of Martin Luther King that people should be treated as individuals and by the content of their character, and not by their group identity. That is also the movie that launched Sidney Poitier’s career. Richard Widmark is great, and I think that Linda Darnell shows high level acting as well. You should review this truly great, but often overlooked film sometime.

04:12 - ABEL GANCE's NAPOLEON Napoléon is a 1927 silent French epic film written, produced, & directed by Abel Gance that tells the story of Napoleon's early years. On screen, the title is Napoléon vu par Abel Gance, meaning "Napoleon as seen by Abel Gance". The film is recognised as a masterwork of fluid camera motion, produced in a time when most camera shots were static. Many innovative techniques were used to make the film, including -- fast cutting, --extensive close-ups, --a wide variety of hand-held camera shots, --location shooting, --point of view shots, --multiple-camera setups --multiple exposure, --superimposition, --underwater camera, --kaleidoscopic images, --film tinting, --split screen& --mosaic shots, --multi-screen projection, & other visual effects. A revival of Napoléon in the mid-1950s influenced the filmmakers of the French New Wave. On 31 August 1979, Napoléon was shown to a crowd of hundreds at the Telluride Film Festival, in Telluride, Colorado. The film was presented in full Polyvision at the specially constructed Abel Gance Open Air Cinema, which is still in use today. Gance was in the audience until the chilly air drove him indoors after which he watched from the window of his room at the New Sheridan Hotel. Brownlow's 1980 reconstruction was re-edited & released in the United States by American Zoetrope (through Universal Pictures) with a score by Carmine Coppola performed live at the screenings. The restoration premiered in the United States at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on 23-25 January 1981; each performance showed to a standing room only house. Gance could not attend because of poor health. At the end of 24 January screening, a telephone was brought onstage and the audience was told that Gance was listening on the other end and wished to know what they had thought of his film. The audience erupted in an ovation of applause and cheers that lasted several minutes. The acclaim surrounding the film's revival brought Gance much-belated recognition as a master director before his death eleven months later, in November 1981 Another restoration was made by Brownlow in 1983. When it was screened at the Barbican Centre in London, French actress Annabella, who plays the fictional character Violine in the film (personifying France in her plight, beset by enemies from within and without), was in attendance. She was introduced to the audience prior to screenings and during one of the intervals sat alongside Kevin Brownlow, signing copies of the latter's book about the history and restoration of the film. Brownlow re-edited the film again in 2000, including previously missing footage rediscovered by the Cinémathèque Française in Paris. Altogether, 35 minutes of reclaimed film had been added, making the total film length of the 2000 restoration five and a half hours. On 13 November 2016, Napolėon was the subject of the Film Programme on BBC Radio 4. The BBC website announced: "Historian Kevin Brownlow tells Francine Stock about his 50-year quest to restore Abel Gance's silent masterpiece Napoleon to its five and half-hour glory, and why the search for missing scenes still continues even though the film is about to be released on DVD for the very first time." A restoration of the almost-seven-hour-long so-called Apollo version (i.e. the version of Napoléon shown at the Apollo Theatre in Paris in 1927), conducted by Cinémathèque Française and financed by the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée along with Netflix, is scheduled to be completed by 5 May 2021. -- Wikipedia

Great video Elliot and I was so happy that Flight of The Navigator got a mention! I do have a question for you though- are there any murder mystery type films you'd recommend? As a reference, I've always loved the classic Agatha Christie mysteries. I hope you and your loved ones are safe and well.

Fantastic collection. I started a steelbook review channel 10 years ago and I cannot abide steelbooks any more. I have been buying second hand criterion editions from eBay and some have arrived with damaged cases. Elliot, do you know if it is possible to buy replacement criterion style cases?
@rgmsound4 жыл бұрын
Fantastic collection, very impressive. Where did you get those shelving units? They look made for blu rays - need!
@dznker46423 жыл бұрын
To make it easier for yourself, you could do a video per label. Like, a video for all your criterions, a video for all your Arrow blu rays, et cetera, et cetera

Your collection is so beautiful, man. 🙌🏾

Is the fear and loathing in Las Vegas arrow set worth it? I really love the film (I don’t own it), but I want to know if the arrow edition is good
@ElliotCoen4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I would say so! I think it surpasses the previously released Criterion edition. Better to snap up the limited edition before it goes out of print :)

Thanks!

Excellent stuff. You definitely have it over me from Arrow though. To be fair I get over the spine number syndrome by just not sorting by company at all. So I don't worry about gaps. And for that matter the dvd's are happy to go cheek by jowel with the Blu-rays. Alpha only - other than Mr Shakespeare for reference purposes. But I know that would drive a lot of people up the wall cos it does look very untidy!

Thanks, WolfGratz :) I'd personally love to see how you organise your collection!

For the films that you get all the spine numbers for, what do you do if a film you don't like or aren't interested in is apart of the collection? Do you still buy it knowing you don't like it/aren't interested in it or do you pass on it?
@ElliotCoen4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, thanks for watching and for this comment! Yes, I still buy a film in these collections even if I think I won't like it. Often it's a problem with me and not the film, so I like to study a film like that to work out what I'm not getting that other people love about it!

Yeah, I’m gonna need that 6 hour video.

Hi Elliot. It’s great to see your collection overview. I’d love to see you talk about some of the labels in more detail, especially Second Run, as it’s a really underrated label that not many people talk about - and it definitely deserves more recognition! Which labels are you a ‘completist’ of and from which do you just buy what calls your attention? For me, generally speaking, I would have to say those that have a spine number (for the reasons you’ve mentioned.. although Criterion is very ambitious!). I also plan to own every film from Arrow Academy (they’re very Eureka and Criterion-esque and the type of film which is right up my street). From other labels like Arrow Video and BFI I tend to just buy what interests me. Also, do you have a favourite label (both in terms of the quality of the releases and in terms of the films that they put out)?
@ElliotCoen4 жыл бұрын
Hi Travis - I'll make a video focusing on Second Run very soon! As for which labels I'm a completist of, I would say them all! But some I am closer to completion than other. As for a favourite label, that changes every day. Criterion will always have the softest spot for me though! Thanks for watching, it's great to have you on the channel!

Hi Elliot, if you don’t mind me asking where do you get the majority of your criterion imports from? Is there a certain website you use or do you have someone in the US that can pick them up for you?
@ElliotCoen4 жыл бұрын
Hello! I used to import them via wowHD, but they now add on VAT which they never used to. I have some family in the US who can send me films, but my last large acquisition was when I went to the US in November during the Barnes and Noble sale and I bought an awful lot of movies! Thanks for watching and commenting :)

I wonder how much you've spent? I have similar problem with having a box set and duplicate of the individual films. Problem is I am running out of space and need to archive loads.
@lowres964 жыл бұрын
What blu ray player do you use to play the US boxsets because finding a region free player is a bit of a hassle since I don't really trust reviews.

Hi Elliott, just thinking...what are your thoughts on Robert Altman's work? Especially 'Three Women'? Sorry if youvr already covered this subject on another video ...Still working through your content 😀😀😀

Wow, what an impressive collection, my friend. You certainly have a great taste in cinema. I also have Napoleon, the Roy Andersson collection and the Late Mizoguchi boxset and we can consider ourselves very lucky to have them. Only top quality titles there, sir. Criterion, Arrow, Eureka, Indicator... Charlie's Angels??!!!! Anyway, thank you for showing it. Take care!

Charlie's Angels is surely a contender for the Masters of Cinema series, right? Thanks for watching :)

Goodness, I really miss having HMV here (in Canada). That used to be one of my favourite stores to shop at when I was a teenager. I bought so many great classic film releases and collector's edition box sets there. Have you ever heard of Kino Lorber? They produce some really awesome bluray releases - similar in quality and style to Criterion discs.
