Absolutely best video for the normalization. In this example regarding the update anomaly if there is a change in the price obiviously we need to add one more row in the products table and create a new product id . Because if you change the price all the other transactions also got impacted which is not right because the purchase is already completed. This is like SCD2 add start date and end date in the products table. This is just my opinion.

Best ever detailed and well explained video on DB normalization.
@anuragshah3433 Жыл бұрын
For those who are confused on transitive dependency in 3NF, if we just look at the output of 2NF, Order_ID -> Order Number and Order number -> Sales contact first name and Order number -> Sale contact second name hence there is a transitive dependency. It was not flagged in 2NF as Order ID -> Sales contact first name and Order Id -> Sales contact second name, hence these are completely dependent on pk as well.
@ChandraS-j1f20 күн бұрын
still i have confused between 2NF and 3NF transitive dependency, as you said if he created a separate table for sales details during 2NF then how could we understand about 3NF if there are no transitive dependencies . thanks

Good explanation. One observation about the foreign keys. It might be a matter of personal preferences. Your example shows a separate 'relationship' table where you store primary keys of all the tables to tie them together. This is a good way. But another way which I have seen is to add the primary key of the product, customer, employee in the order table as a 'foreign key'. So you don't need a separate relationship table. This also simplifies the join. For example if you just want to show all the orders and customers. In the case of having a relationship table, you would have to join the order table with the relationship table, and then join with the customer table. In case you store the foreign key of customers in the order table, you just join the order and the customer table. I would love to read the benefits of choosing one over the other.

Great explanation Thoufiq. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. I really like the way you channelize your thoughts in an easily comprehensible manner. The speed, clarity and content of your videos are absolutely perfect. Have watched other videos of yours and same opinion goes for them too. Coming to this one, i guess you knowingly kept the sales info till the 3rd step to explain transitive dependency, though you could've eliminated it at the same time you normalized Order/Prod/Cust info, since sales, just like customer, was also absolutely independent of candidate keys. Keep up the good work
