Let me add one: Claytonia (Miner's Lettuce). It's very delicate of leaf and flavor, and thrives in cold weather! We absolutely love it.

I have lettuce sprouting in a makeshift cold frame of straw bales and cinder blocks. 4 degrees F overnight but 26 in the cold frame. Can't wait to see what happens. First time I'm trying it out.

With the exception of Florida, and southern California, I think we are all experiencing a severe winter this year. My garden was thriving until yesterday. Now it is taking a beating. I lost a lot that is outside the protection of greenhouse plastic, lettuce and endive for sure. It will be Monday, or Tuesday before I dare remove the plastic covering my raised beds to fully assess the damage. From what I can see, there is some loss, but also a lot that is hanging on. In a few weeks, I'll be adding a small greenhouse to my garden, 10x12x7, and making three 2ft x 8ft x 8 inch raised beds to go inside it. I'll be able to add bio mass or supplemental heat if needed, and bring a few containers inside next year to get my garden through the coldest days of winter. I'll be better prepared the next time an artic blast comes south to Alabama.

Great supporting info Luke. I would have to agree. We are in our 3rd day below 15 degrees and my Kale, cabbage, radish and spinach which are all uncovered and looks unbothered. Surprisingly, my Yarrow is still looking good. The swiss chard not as good and I did cover them. Collards are frozen but I believe they will survive. While I am not a fan of this cold weather it's refreshing to know that planning for these days by planting accordingly is paying off so far. Best growing to all and Happy Holidays.

Iowa Zone 5a. This fall I transplanted a row of Swiss Chard into a cardboard box to make way for garlic cloves. Sitting just behind the sliding glass door where I put it down and forgot, the chard has continued to sprout leaves. It looks happy. The surface soil dries out quickly, so I'm watering once a week and hoping for the best. I guess we'll see if this works throughout the winter. In the meantime, do any of you have any experience with garlic in frozen earth? I've got it mulched of course, but with -10° F temps, the ground will be frozen solid. Is this okay for garlic?

My dad forced bulbs in the winter. He watered them with snow. They could take the amount of water they needed and the snow insulated them, so that the water they took did not freeze.

Well, I can testify that my greens and brassicas were just fine until the bomb cyclone 40-50mph winds wouldnt let my plants stay covered outdoors. Just the 20's already made mush of my new tree kale. Who knows what tomorrow holds after 12 overnight. Red romaine was double covered in greenstalk in a hexagon small greenhouse which before dark was already torn to shreds. Im crushed.

Interesting. I thought that pots were more prone to freeze than soil in the ground. I will give this a try.

I have read kind of the opposite about growing in the ground vs in containers. The containers can freeze solid a lot more easily than the ground due to having smaller thermal mass. I am winter growing in my first year with a smaller greenhouse in z6 MO. I have some stuff in ground and some in containers, so far they have been similar. I started some in October and they grew super well and I already harvested my radishes and spinach already. My turnips are still going but close to maturity. Stuff I started in November have been super slow. So far I havent seen rot or dampening off but my greenhouse is on a slope so it has the effect of being a raised bed without being a very high one ...
@noraalvarado8178
@noraalvarado8178 Жыл бұрын
That's what I was also thinking. When the weather warms up in the spring containers will warm up faster than in ground stuff. But I think they would freeze quicker than in the ground when winter arrives.

My new greenhouse was just built and everyone wants to know what I’m growing. 😂 First I have to get the kinks out - stake it down, landscape stones around the edges, weed fabric and gravel for floor, then move all the shelves/supplies inside and set up a thermometer inside. Glad I’m taking time to get these done before sacrificing seeds.

This is great! I just checked my salad greens under the grow light and my spinach went straight to seed as soon as it sprouted! This is super helpful thank you! What?? In summer once per week? I live in a very arid Zone 5 climate with between 10 to 20 inches of total annual precipitation, and a good amount of that arrives as winter snow. Plus a lot of that can be lost due to evaporation in Chinook winds. Relative Humidity is typically between 10% to 50%. At 5,000 feet elevation, the sun's illuminance is also higher due thinner atmosphere. In summer, my plants simply won't survive the midday heat unless I water every day, early in the morning. I am growing a small scale winter crop of leafy plants indoors. And this week we're seeing outdoor temps of - 20°F at night. I do not believe I can succeed with fruiting vegetables under my grow lights, their light needs are just too much. I am working with succession planting schedules for spinach and lettuce and just learning how to adjust for that. Hopefully, as we get closer to spring, I can take advantage of some cold frames, outdoors and get some early starts put in.

Your shadow will actually be around 13.7ft long at solar noon on Dec 21 in Port Huron if you're 6ft tall, and 2.1ft long at solar noon on June 21. So yeah, huge difference.

In cases like this winter, to keep things above freezing, how much heat is needed? Say you hit single digits at night, low teens in day. Say a pilot lite and small circulation fan?

Aren't the containers gong to freeze if the temperature gets cold? I've always heard your plants in containers roots are affected by the cold and not protected as they would be in the ground.

Ever tried using net pots? I am currently growing in a large square net pot a bunch of radishes. I line the net pot with saran cloth to keep the soil from washing out when I water. Today I pulled out one of the young radishes. Very nice, not bitter but sweet!! Will have to see if the leaves are as sweet too!!

You must be in a really protected area as the rest of us are well below zero. However the crazy weather will change to the 40s by next week. Unless your heating the GH already? Will try some lettuce today. Been hearing there is a shortage. Just like you said to save seeds, crops can fail elsewhere. I’d much prefer to eat homegrown, but Man is it cold right now-Brrrrrr!

It's all about timing! Need to plant early enough in the fall that plants are at maturity before late November / early December rolls around. Many growers in Michigan are harvesting right through the winter, with bunching greens planted in mid-August, head lettuces planted in mid-September, and baby salad greens planted in October.
