You can test if an electric fence is on with a fresh blade of grass. It acts as a resistor. You will feel the electric shock but very minimal. You start with the full length of the blade and then slowly move the point of contact to your fingers. Als you move closer you wil faintly feel the pulse. My dad grew up on a farm, he taught me.

Willow will grow in almost any condition as long as it has moisture! You can just stick it straight in the ground and it will grow.. no need to dig any holes atall!

When I was a child my cousin had an electrical fence for their sheep. I have no idea how powerful it was but I do remember holding a blade of grass and touching the wire you could feel a little jolt but it wouldn't hurt you.

An easy trick to test if your fence is working: lay a long blade of grass across the wire you're testing with your hand about 8" from the wire. Move your hand sliding the blade of grass closer until you just begin to feel it. If it's on, and depending on how strong your fence is, you should feel it by about 3".

I find your idea of using a small cutting next to a large a different idea, and I'm curious to see how well it works for you. I'll be starting more hazel hedge this year, I laid my first one this month, and seeing how well it works I'll be doing lots more. I think I need to run mine taller eventually to keep the elk out. Have you tried using a shovel to plant your cuttings? I just stab it into the dirt, and push the handle away from me, and slip the cutting down the exposed slot, slip the shovel out of the slot, and step on the dirt on the side away from me to compact the dirt back against the cutting. Sort of like digging razor clams in reverse. I've seen in an English book on coppicing where the author uses the same method I use, but makes a tee shape slot where the cutting goes in. Possibly that tee shape gives the roots another crack to follow easily? Well this is my 2nd post on your vids, so I've also subscribed. I used to live in a dry area too, happily that's not an issue where I live now. I assume you're experimenting with dry farming of crops?

You take a grass straw and touch the live wire with that. Touch the wire with the straw at various distances and you can gently feel if the wire is live or not.

I was about to say the exact same thing and this trip really does work I've used it to tense high tensile cattle fencing before which is pretty high voltage you just have to be patient and move slowly with it and wait for that Tapping sensation

Instead of all the digging just hammer in a 3’ length of rebar about a foot deep. Pull it out and stick your willow poles and whips. Then you can just tamp the hole and you’re done.

I would guess that you are grounded out you can get a piece of garden hose or any kind of rubber and put your wire through it then attach it to you pen and it will fix your grounding out. :)

Hello Dirtpatcheaven! I can't believe I'm just seeing this... 2 years after the fact 🤓 I watch a lot! Of your videos. What's the coldest / hottest, when you were doing this? Love your videos now in 2017 of you and your family traveling around. Congratulations on your tiny little house you're working on. Bless, take care 🙋🏻🇺🇸💯

The coldest was down in the -20F and the hottest was in the high 90's F. I think if you have any kind of invasive plant or tree you can use it for a living fence. I have to encourage and water mine to get it started but I am hoping to soon be down to watering once a month. In a more water-rich area maybe you wouldn't have to water at all. I am working on a video showing how to grow a living fence in a swale with beneficial herbs and edibles.

@@dirtpatcheaven did u ever do that particular video? I'm interested in creating a shelter belt to absorb the spray from the fields BEFORE it blows into my gardens. I had horrible damage mutating my beets, beans, peppers, aquashes and tomatoes. I'd like this woven wicker/living fence for shade and feed for rabbits and chickens. This fence still looks lovely by ur deck, it's grown out very well.

so, goats won't eat the fence once it's done? or does the electric fence have to be permanent so they won't eat it?

Ask tree growers in your area what sorts of legume trees (nitrogen fixing ones) grow well in your area. Such trees are often used for living fences in tropical climates.
