Thank you for the honesty and clarity. Things like "and i lost a bunch being unprepared and lazy" I LOVE that you say stuff like that. Thats how it really works, 1 time of being like 'eh ill do it later' can hurt so much sometimes, thats why all the old farmers are like the most diligent people ever, they have learned that lesson too many times.

@3:58 TRUTH! I use soil blocks also. I put my seeds in the blocks and wet it, this stirs the soil blocks a little and is just about right for the amount of soil you need to cover those seeds. All great info! Thanks for the guidance.

Cover with shadecloth for a week or two after Transplanting -> immensely helps with the whole "transplant shock" thing. Its hardening off, but better, basically.

Nice timing.. and looks like I haven't missed anything.. growing lettuice for the first time here in the UK (home grower).. germination: no problem, doing them in soil blocks, getting over 90% germination. not using shade cloth on our bedded plants, only had one hot day (over 30c) this year. Our BIGGEST problem is the bloody blackbirds.. we've had to net/protect everything that's gone in since May as they're digging into the compost and pulling out ALL the seadlings. I now understand why you'd want to put four and twenty black birds in a pie!

I have heard from other gardeners that romaine lettuces have been heat tolerant also. Some heat-tolerant types are Rouge d'Hiver, and Parris Island Romaine. I've had good luck with Red Sails, Vulcan, and Tango Red leaf lettuces in warmer months. Also, I found that using a soil moisture meter to determine when to water was very helpful.

its been mid 80's and higher in Southern New Hampshire and I confirm Johnny's romaine has done very well. In my main lettuce bed that gets full sun, I use 30% shade cloth, misters and mulch. In my other bed that has mostly romaine that has sun to 2 PM, I just mist. We do usually get cooler in the evening which helps though. I transplant 100% for all lettuce. I can grow from April through October.

We always soak our lettuce for 2-3 minutes in a 10:1 water-vinegar bath just before eating. We’ve had surprises from caterpillars, spiders, ladybugs even after just washing with water. We shake out the lettuce well, and don’t notice any flavor change since we use oil and vinegar for dressing anyways.

Thank you Mathew McConaughey 😆 I’m new to gardening and tried growing two varieties of lettuce last month, Buttercrunch & Yedikule, they were doing well but is now stunted in growth so I figured it’s due to the high heat as I’m in central Florida. I’ll give it another try around September when we’re not reaching triple digits temperature.

We have avoided lettuce after June in Eastern NC due to horrid results. This coming year I’ll dedicate a tunnel with 50% shade to see if we can make it work. Will also try some field rows. We routinely break over 95 in the summer and heat index is 105-110. So I am still skeptical.

We grow Syngenta seeds multileaf lettuce it's cheaper then other multileaf seed companies and salanova. Syngenta are the only seed company in the world and first seed company with a disease resistant to Anthracnose which can wipe out lettuce in extreme heat humidity and transition period from cold to heat where the plants stress. We farm in New Zealand
