There is nothing like working for a pet store, to make you swear that you won't make the mistakes that the store does. My daughter worked for Petco for 3 months, and she had to quit. The condition of the animals broke her heart.

Keeping horned lizards will be easier to keep as the ant keeping hobby gets more advanced. Probably for Australian Thorny Devils, too!

Because i have the direct equivalent of the thorny devil in my care I think they are not so hard to keep :)

This is gold! Benjamin is my friend I talk to him daily & he is the standard for how reptiles of all species should be kept. Good work Dylan 👌🏽

I spent part of my childhood in West Texas, where my parents had acreage in the country. Me and my siblings would play with horned lizards. They were everywhere on the property. I even have photos of them mating in there natural environment. There numbers slowly dwindled as fire ants took over and the property was developed. I love these creatures. They were such docile fascinating animals. So glad to watch this.

I’ve always been curious about the ant diet, how he manages to keep up with the demand. Great episode 😊

I would love an episode specifically on common practice among dart frog keepers that are considered risky by more experienced keepers. Like water features, cohabitation of different morphs/species, and using aquariums rather than front opening tanks with front vents.

That would be fascinating, I will add that to my topic list! Thanks for the recommendation

This was one of the best interviews I've ever watched and heard. Facinating, interesting, and educating. I learned sooo much and about many things. I know Dayyan at Reptiliatus watches you, I sure hope he doesn't miss this excellent podcast! Please mention to Benjamin what an awesome scientist he is and how well received!

Loved this episode. Benjamin has really helped push the bar for captive husbandry. As horned lizard populations are declining across their native range, some Zoo’s are already working at captive breeding and reintroduction efforts with P. cornutum. Perhaps with other species, they might learn a thing for two from him!

I bet they could absolutely learn a few things from him! Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the episode.

What incredible dedication! Amazing work. I've just reared 10 baby Rankin Dragons and I thought they were small enough! if Benjamin comes back on, it would be good to hear about his new setups, the design, substrate and aplication eg where do the Horned Lizards sleep, their daily routine etc Would Benjamin know what ants in the UK would be comparableto the Harvest Ants? Thanks Dylan - fantastic guest.

So, basically it's a bearded dragon that hates to me snuggled, and is 1,000 times harder to feed. Got it. I do love their stubby little faces, though. ❤

How many hatching do you get a year? Working with them for 20 years and not selling them I am curious how you don't have a stable population already.
@DraganthasDragons5 ай бұрын
Depending on the species between 20 to 50 is possible. I also put my females on a break every two clutches. I never said I don't sell them but not just to anyone. Population stability is not defined only by numbers. You need genetic diversity and monitor that strictly.

@DraganthasDragons I grew up in Borger Texas in the 80s and as a kid I used to catch these every day!. They are one of my favorite species! We started ant colonies last year to see if we can substantially raise our own before getting a trio ourselves. 2025 is our plan to obtain some.
