This is a full-resolution version of the NASA Curiosity rover descent to Mars and landing, taken by the MARDI descent imager. As of August 20, all but a dozen 1600x1200 frames have been uploaded from the rover, and those missing were interpolated using thumbnail data. The result was applied a heavy noise reduction, color balance, and sharpening for best visibility.
The video plays at 15fps, or 3x realtime. The heat shield impacts in the lower left frame at 0:21, and is shown enlarged at the end of the video. Image source: mars.jpl.nasa.g...

We did this, man. A bunch of constantly squabbling, slightly advanced apes built a goddamn space robot that flew millions of miles through the void and succesfully landed on _a completely different planet_, just because we wanted to go see what it was like over there. Hardcore adventure science like this is why I never lose faith in Human Potential.

nightlightabcd Jesus Christ, why can’t you just leave politics out of space travel. Do you really hate him _that much_ that you can’t just let someone appreciate our good accomplishments? Dammmmm one of the top 3 videos/images EVER, EVER. Images or videos of the Moon, Pluto and Mars have got to be the most influential ever. Especially this one and the moon landings. Think about it, the first images/video of a foreign planet. Truly amazing. When I was a kid in the 80's I would lie in bed and the two questions that would keep me up all night was, is there life beyond earth? and what major events will I see in my lifetime? I think it's grossly under rated how big and amazing this video is. The first contact with the red planet.

That's not an edit, that's the transition to powered flight mode - it's simply a bit jarring at the sped-up frame rate. I agree they should prioritize getting the best possible video on these missions, but the last few frames STILL have not been uploaded: so you can get an idea how tight the bandwidth is.

the thing with manned missions is you have to account for the radiation levels more then with an unmanned rover/satellite, oxygen, food and waste that is produced during the mission. also an unmanned mission that can continue many years vs a manned mission that only could stay on the surface for a week or two. I would say that unmanned missions is more cost effective.

It's the most inane unbelievably short sighted view I have ever heard. When the knowledge and riches of other worlds wait for us, and we spend our time eating ourselves alive with endless conflict. Ok I was devastated when Armstrong passed, he was one of my heroes, but I don't think we should have so much pride in America for it. I'm American and I think he did something incredible, but the thing is, is that when Neil was up there on the Moon he wasn't thinking of his country but all of mankind. We didn't accomplish something as a country but as humans. It shouldn't make a difference what his nationality was, the point is he did something amazing as a human being, not an American...

look at it again and notice the altitude, they are mountains just like you would see on earth at that altitude,im saying, when it lands it does'nt seem to get any closer and dust is being lifted up ,and yes i know it landed on flat surface but the surface dont change from so high up to when it lands,it looks the same.

bug is hard to see unless full screen and HD. Divide the screen into 9 squares, the bug is a dot near the corner of the upper left square and the middle square

I'm that way. I'm so damn scatter-brained when I'm sober.
