Complete Raised Bed Garden Install: Construction, Soil, Drip Irrigation + More

John from www.growingyour... shows you how to install a complete raised bed patio garden from start to finish.
In this episode, John will first assess the patio space and figure out the best layout taking into consideration the sun and shade. He will then go to the local Home Depot and pick up all the wood, soil, screws, irrigation supplies, and plants.
You will learn what different products John bought and why they are important to your success as a beginner gardener.
Next, John will show you how easy it is to build a 12" high raised bed garden using some pre-cut lumber from home depot and a cordless drill.
You will then discover the importance of selecting the best vegetable gardening soil you can to grow your food. You will discover John's favorite brand of bagged soil products as well as some other critical soil amendments you should include in your raised beds to maximize the health and yield of your plants. You will learn the specific measurements of home much of the different soil amendments are being added to the soil mixture.
Next, you will discover the best low-cost kit that will allow you to easily install a drip irrigation system in your raised bed garden as well as an automatic water timer that will water your plants so that you don't have to. You will learn how to make a plan for the drip irrigation tubing and why it is important to have a water filter to remove some of the contaminants and chemicals in the water.
Next, you will learn how to plant the plants in the new garden as well as the importance of proper plant spacing.
Finally, John will show how to install a drip emitter into the drip tubing to ensure your plants are getting the water they need to thrive.
Finally, John will sit down with the renter, Rachel Stewart who just got her garden installed as well as Josh Cunnings from the Boogie Brew Company to ask them some questions.

Add Josh, and this should be more than a KZbin site--PBS should pick this up and do a series on it, because it is soooo much better than regular square foot gardening. Before I began learning from this site, my old square foot garden raised beds were mediocre. Now, thanks to the methods King Green shows, I may have a messy back yard, but I can supply friends and family with food. I added more boxes because this site showed me how to make it less time-consuming per square. John, if I were rich, I would sponsor a PBS show for you.

Rachel, one year I learned about how great Blood meal was for gardens, so I bought a bag, and spread it all over my garden. Wow, you should have SEEN that garden, the most healthy and beautiful ever! But nothing fruited! Come to find out, nitrogen is for growing LEAVES! What I should have been adding for fruiting veggies, like cucumbers, was BONE MEAL, not blood meal. (although it IS good for things like lettuce and all the other veggies where you are eating the leaves!). Hope that helped! LOVE you girl!

Well I would say for that watering to catch some rain, but I lived in Las Vegas for nearly 15 years and in that time I seen maybe 10" of rain. haha! I'm now in TX and love it. But there is a few months I am seeing I cannot grow food outdoors in basically in Dec, Jan, Feb. But love your videos and I learn so much!

Mix a small cup of soapy water. Dip your screws in it point and a good portion of the threads. The screws will go in alot faster/easier. Usually no need to drill pilot holes.

Great clear demonstration of setting up irrigation for the raised beds. I never got it before. It helps to have your recommendation for a specific irrigation kit. I was often derailed trying to pick out all of the components. Many thanks.

A backing should of been put on that box, now renter risk staining the brick. A ground covering like thick cardboard/ weed preventer to keep the rocks cleaner ( or just clear them out and replace them when the renter moves ) would of been a good idea. Either way it's great they are growing their own food and creating a better environment for theirselves in their backyard. I wish them well in their efforts. Thanks for posting the video.

John, thanks for all your effort in shearing your experience with this organic food thing. Your friendly entertaining manner provided enough persuasion for me, (a red-neck conservative old fart) to consider, and to try, this organic garden thing. Now I’m trying to commit to it. I would like your 2 cents on replacing the “Mell’s Garden Mix” ingredient’s, (vermiculite and peat or coco core), with native soil. I’ll leave out the log spiel on why, but If you did this, how exactly would you do it? I live in Grass Valley Ca, and my soil is not likely to be contaminated and it’s a heavy clay. I had Peaceful Valley Farms store test my soil, and it is surprising good for minerals. My only soil short coming is the tippical drainage trouble with clay, and lack of organic matter and micro biology. I’m building my razed beds for, among other reasons, to protect my plants from moles and gophers. I’m building my razed beds with screen to stop dirt rodents from intruding. I’m also trying to build the best possible soil for my vegetables, and healthy food. I think this is one of your top issues. Peaceful Valley says they never heard of Mell Bartholomew, and don’t seem to get the Mell’s mix for vegetable gardening or square foot gardening thing. My discussion with the (Peaceful Valley soil authority) provided the following info; My Peaceful Valley Raised bed potting soil is effective for short term, but very expensive for long term. It must be improved at significant expense, every year. Improved native soil in my area is ideal for long term, but it will take 5 years to build an optimum growing medium. I’d like to have a heathy long term soil medium ASAP. As discussed above; I would like your 2 cents on replacing the “Mell’s Garden Mix” ingredient’s, (vermiculite and peat or coco core), with native soil. I’ve followed your discussion of the importance building good soil, and I’m putting huge effort into this. I agree with your opinion to review many ideas on this. I’ve also been following the (one yard revolution KZbin channel. I’ve set up a couple of 4 ft by 8 ft raised beds with potting soil from a local organic garden supply store, Peaceful Valley Farms. Your buddy Josh seem s to think there the real deal. By the way, I also appreciate Josh’s help with my stuff. I think he’s one for the good guys. You just gave me a great idea. I am into micocontrollers and the smaller ones only have 3 or 4 usable ports. All you need is a relay that controls a a water pump wired to an arduino or esp 8266 or esp32 or attiny device. Then they sell water sensors that are basicly 2 wires that go down into the ground and detect the water level of the soil. when there is no water no power would be recived from that circuit and that would tell the microntoller to turn on the relay for the water pump for a time that you set like say 5 minutes or 10 or whatever you want. That would be so easy to set up. Controlling these microcontrollers is not that dificult. The arduino and the esp devices have usb ports on them to configure them. The attiny devices are better for power but are more complicated to set up. Its not rocket science. Look into how easy it is. it is c++ but all you are doing is specifying the ports you are using and give it limits so that when power is not received by the water sensor (basicly if) then turn on the relay for the water pump for x minutes. Heck maybe only a minute. You can set it for whatever you want. It would be much easier to throw the soil straight into the garden bed and mix. Dosn't need to be exact, for example: when it rains or when you water and the water runs out the bottom, so does the nutrience and minerals and therfore your measurements are out in the first week anyways :) Just chuck it in the garden bed and mix. It will be fine. You will get it done in less than half the time not to mention the weight of the tote once you fill it (for all the females out there LOL!)

hi john, i bought a aloe vera plant in a pot a bout 6-7 months ago, i have it on my patio in my rental apt. the problem i have is that it would grow but in no time the would start fallig over the pot & dying, at first i thought i was watering too much then i stop yet it's still dying. do i need to add any of those stuff in the doil to allow it to grow? any ideas would help. thanks

i will never buy another bag of worm gold plus again. the last bag was half plastic. it looked great until I really went through it. little pieces of plastic were every where. it could of been just the one bag, but i doubt it. Dr Earth products had some plastic as well but nothing like the worm gold plus. Maybe a piece or two in the two bags a bought.

john why cant you grow your greens under fruit trees do they really need that much sun in your climate? youd go up a zone if you had a tree canopy even if the trees are in pots, and i would think it would be ideal in the desert anyway cut way back on your water, it sounds like you have a leafy green infestation and you need to plant some trees to help get rid of them lol imagine how much space lettuce takes up to get the same weight as say an orange.. not even a comparison lol just thin em out a bit how cold you not

I didn't say that right. Uncomposted - not fully broken down compost - can spread bad microbes and other diseases among your plants and the excessive nitrates present in uncomposted material will cause the plant greenery to grow faster but not produce fruit because of the nitrates. I am uncertain about the edible quality of plants grown in uncomposted material.
