Thanks for making these videos. I bought the Kennedy Half from your website for my wife as a christmas present. But more importantly through your videos I've picked up some tools and my 12 year old daughter and I will be attempting to make some quarter rings for other family members for christmas presents as well...looking forward to working with her do do that...should be fun. With your videos we're pretty confident we should be able to do this and make some unique gifts.

Skyler, as a side note: What are your thoughts on this punch kit www.sunsetcrystals.com.au/disc-cutter-set-of-14-round.html As harbor freight is quite expensive to ship items to AUS, i am looking local. If this set is not appropriate, I will probably be looking at Jasons Self Centering Punch Kit, but would like to avoid that cost for as long as possible. Cheers.

Well considering Jason's worx tools are insanely expensive now you looking at way more than $1,000. It's almost $1,000 just for his punches, 60 bucks for one small backup punch.

I almost paid $70 for a certain coin ring on ebay, ended up researching them and ended up here. Well, I jumped in. I planned to get some of the basic tools for fun, then ended up spending $200 for the intermediate kit plus some extras. Hoping I can sell some rings locally and break even =P I'll be building a portable workbench tomorrow (end table size) while I wait, needed a work space for making models in an apartment anyway.

@overload889

I used the 9 piece punch and die set to make my first ring and the plastic top broke. I got one ring out of it. I've been looking for an alternative to the center punch method, maybe a drill press or something. I still have the broken punch set (the punches are fine) in case I find a way of mending it, but I would advise against buying this tool.
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 8 жыл бұрын
+overload889 It is really important to make sure the top and bottom plate are lined up or bad things can happen for sure but for the price it is a great tool. It just takes some extra attention.
@overload889
@overload889 8 жыл бұрын
That might be what went wrong, or that I was using it on the wrong surface. I saw fencekid use it on an anvil, which at the time I didn't have. I used it first on a wooden bench top and then on a concrete floor. Either way, it didn't end up being worth the investment for me. I guess experiences vary.

If you think you want to do something, but don't want to invest in tools, then you really don't want to do it. Tools are necessary and have to be bought. When you weigh the cost of tools based on the potential income generated, it's a meager expense. There's an old saying: you have to spend money to make money!

Hey man! Thanks for the vids! Subbed here! This seems like a very cool side gig that id be interested in. How much would you recommend to sell pre-1964 quarter and half dollar rings?
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 9 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. It really comes down to when you are getting started the price will be lower. I started off selling silver halves at $35 and silver quarters at $25 I think. When you get all the details down (the devil is always in the details) you can start to raise the price up. Thanks for watching!

Hi skylar , Great informative videos all of them!! I was wondering when you first started out..what is the demand for rings? Is it a high demand or just one here one there I jammed up my knee pretty bad at work and I am looking for a way to make some income at home while I heal that i can do at my own pace... . Like anything else I do realize that quality work attention to the smallest detail are the best advertisement via word of mouth I guess what i'm asking is how long did it take to get your initial investment back ?
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 8 жыл бұрын
It started slower but it increased pretty quickly. I Just started with a mandrel and a mallet. I drilled holes instead of punching them. That meant my initial investment was about $20. Every time I got enough money from sales, I would buy a new tool that I thought I needed. Within the first year I had built up most of the methods and tools. The main ways I sold them was on facebook buy sell trade pages, craigslist, a saturday market, ebay, and etsy. The more places you offer them, the more you will be able to sell. Hopefully that is what you were looking for. Thanks! Skyler

Hi, I have been checking out the ring stretcher and reducer that you show. I'm a little nervous because of so many negative reviews on it. Would you happen to know about Duke, It looks like yours but it's made in Italy ?? The only draw back the scale is in Hong Kong sizes.
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 8 жыл бұрын
I have never heard of that one. To be honest most stretchers will work. The scale makes no difference because it never is right anyway :). The cheap ones work fine if you know going in that you will need to get the dies smoothed out and you will need to fix the handle in some way. That is their main drawback that gets the negative feedback. They are low end for sure.

I have invested in the step drill bits, nylon mallet, a file set, and a vice. Sincerely, I can not put much more into this until I learn the basics. But I am missing one vital component to my setup - something to start the hole on the coin for my drill bit to bite into. I tried using a nail, and it seemed it would work, but when the drill punched through, it somehow pushed the drill and created a hole off cente. In one of your other videos you used some kind of punch to start the hole in your coin. What is that called so I can find it on harbor Freight? Thanks!
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 9 жыл бұрын
It is just a center punch. The main issue you will have a problem with when it comes to drilling is that it commonly is slightly off center most of the time. A punch and die set like the one at harbor freight will be more of a sure thing than a drill for sure.

Hi Skyler, thanks for your amazing tutorials! Just a simple question: Do you need ball bearings to use the ring stretcher-reducer? I have seen people re-sizing their rings using a ball, and some simply pressing the ring without it. What is the best option and why? :)

Since I made my last post the Holy Spirit has put in my heart to offer encouragement to M' Lady bc I strongly identify which the life of a pagan in her, I've been there I know. I offer this prayer for you, that God will send the Holy Spirit to you with & the power of His Word & you will see plainly your helpless enslavement & receive the Lord's Gift of his blood bought Salvation, I make no judgements bc God made no judgement on me but Grace was given in abundance & so I give to you. God loves u, so to pray for your salvation Our wills must be together, bc he loves u, I love u. God Bless

Going that large tends to stretch them out too far and you lose detail.

Coin Rings from The Mint - Change You Can Wear If I were to bring you customers/orders for any of your work; would you pay me a 25% finders fee? Or as an Affiliate, would you sell me your work at 25% off of your retail price? ...A $50 item to me would be sold for $37.50 as your Affiliate! ...Or as a 'finders fee' you would simply pay me $12.50 on the $50.00 item for the buyer I bring you... This is just a couple of ways for you and I to make some extra money... Just a thought!

why is a grooved mandrel bad to use?
@CoinRingsfromTheMint

Because it will create a ring that wouldn't be perfectly round. That would cause problems when sizing.
