I would just turn the knob 90 degrees from the first hole and drill another hole, but this time have the shaft installed before drilling it that way the hole will be straight through both pieces.

looks better made that any quill held device...!!! You do as you like, but, the ring is real dangerous for you finger, many ways it gets caught, seen and heard horrible misshaps with rings...
