Screw that. He is greater than a warchief. The warchiefs act like there were horses since the tribe was founded. No, horses were reintroduced to America. So who became war chief before then? Ask yourself why stealing a horse is required. Well you stole something of great value from the enemy. Carson did that. See this is why native Americans died. They are afraid of change. Need to update this to stealing a vehicle or a tank at least.

Part of me wonders if the elders knew what elephants were/how dangerous they are or if it was explained to them that they were being used the same as a horse(since the Vietcong did not have any horses, there is a wild horse population in Vietnam but as far as I could find they were never used by the Vietcong). I feel like that might be a little rude to be asking that, though I am still left wondering if their refusal of granting Carson War Chief status might’ve been due to a lack of knowledge or understanding of what an elephant is and how they’ve historically been used in wars before in the place that horses usually would be expected to be in. I would understand if Carson had gotten 2 wild elephants instead of an enemy’s elephant and that not counting, but that wasn’t the case. One thing I wish we knew about is what Joseph Medicine Crow thought about his nephew Carson’s attempt to become a war chief(and if he also agreed with Carson that the elephants should’ve counted for something) cause honestly I think that would be pretty interesting thing to hear about, unfortunately we won’t be able to get that answer out of either of them due to their passing(s) so really the only source we’d get is from second and third hand accounts(like any living family members that knew them and would be quoting what was said) I still find it baller as hell that the last official war chief and the almost last war chief were family, like man that’s so much badassery in 1 family within the same century(heck, said badassery happening loess than 50 years apart), I can only imagine how much more there is in their family a century or 2 prior to this and the thought of that is so cool!!!!

I think the Crow Nation needs to update their War Chief tradition. Horses used to be common now they are essentially non-existant in war. Stealing a vehicle is the modern day equivilant, all though in some conflcts a draft animal mule, donkey, elephant, camel etc or yes - horse would be do-able common, so that should count too. I'm not a native ameican - but to me Carson died a war chief.

Yes the horse thing was a newer addition to the way of becoming a war chief, because horses are fast as fuck and skittish and makes stealing one hard to do, and elephants didn't exist in North America when the horse part was added, they didn't know they even existed yet, which is a really good reason not to say any other animals when they made the rule, and while the elders could change the rules, they most likely won't because of tradition. Like I said, like it or not, still have to respect the ruling. Just like I still have to follow laws I don't agree with.

Yes and no. Horses originally evolved on the North American continent and crossed into Asia and Europe over the land bridge before later going extinct in NA but surviving in Asia and EU. Later, horses were reintroduced to NA by Eu settlers. Unsurprisingly, we know very little about the Crow Nation prior to Europeans showing up. I'm guessing that last requirement was added because of them.
