The late composer/writer Mary Rodgers (1931-2014) discusses the 1996 revival of her classic show "Once Upon a Mattress," starring Sarah Jessica Parker (then 22) on Broadway. She also candidly reminisces about her father, legendary composer Richard Rodgers, as well as his collaborators Larry Hart, Oscar Hammerstein II, Stephen Sondheim & Arthur Laurents.
Next up, is a "Broadway Update' with Riedel & Haskins sparring over the the gravity of Julie Andrews, then in "Victor Victoria" (and age 61), missing 20% of her performances in the otherwise profitable musical.
(Tape Date: December 18, 1996)

Her memoir “Shy,” is absolutely incredible. I feel as though she’s talking to me and she is outrageous. I’m sad to say goodbye.

I loved Mary. It was hard not to instantly fall in love with how adorable, forthright and warm she was. Thanks for this!

I'd have liked to have heard more about Mary Rodgers' career and fewer well-known anecdotes about her father (of whom I am a huge fan, however). I thought it was remarkable that when asked about her father's songwriting process, she recited almost word for word what he used to say himself.

I didn't know she wrote the music for "Mattress"! I remembers her column with her mother, Dorothy, in the Ladies' Home Journal. It was an advice column called Of Two Minds.

Michael Riedel and his nasty, disparaging questions. "Did your father help you write the music?" "Was you father bitter about being seen as antiquated?"
