Deadly rhythm deserves a review more than other song from them. It’s crisp.

It's funny, the drums always steal my attention in this song too, but for me it's very much in a good way. I absolutely love how they sound here, especially in combination with everything else going on behind them. But yeah, another great analysis by you! I didn't necessarily want to request another song from The Shape of Punk to Come just on the off chance that it makes it to an album reaction someday, but this EP works as a kind of companion release to the album, and I always found this song to be very interesting.

You're not wrong about it being a great companion album. This feels like it could have been on The Shape of Punk to Come and not been out of place at all.

Normally punk/hardcore keeps me at arm's length but you said it that there's definitely a proggy element here that keeps me interested musically. They aren't the first band I've heard to try to mix punk and prog: ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead have done a similar thing, though much later than Refused. Generally the two genres have dichotomous aesthetic and musical principles, with the former favoring simplicity and aggression and the latter favoring complexity and more subtle tonalities, so it's really interesting to hear bands try to keep punk's aggression but incorporating it in more complex musical or ambitious musical contexts. Art rock and punk have been compatible going all the way back to The Velvet Underground in the late-60s, but generally the bands that followed in that vein really didn't have the technical talents to justify their loftier ambitious, but this is definitely upping the standard of technical talent to pull off the more complex ideas/ambitions. Very interesting stuff.

The historical pinnacle of that unholy mix (along with Refused' The Shape of Punk to Come) are most definitely Vaya (more experimental) and Relationship of Command (more badass) by At the Drive-in, made by guys who would actually form a true prog band (The Mars Volta) just 3 years later.

Refused actually released one more song after this record. Music was written and recorded before the infamous US tour, but Dennis wrote the lyrics and recorded it shortly after. Its about his band members selling out their ideals, one of the strongest songs Refused ever made. "Somewhere along the way this became a one man crusade". kzbin.info/www/bejne/nauXeWqqjciYfdE

This to me is more dance music. I know some in the band at this time liked The Prodigy and the like.

Nice I havn't listened to Refused in a very long time! You do great reviews my friend. I enjoyed the one of O' Brother awhile back I seen you first on odysee. 💪 If you enjoy chord progressions, _Very Dark_, chord progressions. *Sigmund Krahe* is some of the best I've heard.. "Opus 242 [The Duke's Arrival]" "The Bride" "Opus 248 [Visions of Hell]" "From The Ashes" "Vorzeichen" The mystery of his dissapearance is bothering many of us. Even if not to review it, you may be glad to have heard his works.
