I'm a bass clef kind of person. I totally get this guy. And I like when he started to say, "anything the cello or bassoon can play..", and hinting that the tuba could use more solos. Got it. Check! Will do. I agree.

I'm really enjoying these videos Michael! Thank you for doing these! I look forward to watching the other ones. I'm very tempted to write melodic Tuba lines now!

5:52 Did that sound come from the tuba? It sounded like a note from the cimbasso was edited over the video.

Tornquist looks totally over this interview. He has good points, and I agree with his lament about the cimbasso. It's not only percussive, it can also be lyrical, but I guess when you're working in Hollywood, not all "composers" know much about musical instruments.

Doug... what kind of horn is that? Hirsbrunner? How did you win it in the 1997 ITEC? Thumbs down on the video because it fades out at the end right when Doug is getting into Prokofiev's 5th.

Love Prokofiev's 5th! Great choice. :)

I would like to have heard him do something melodic on the cimbasso. Same goes for all instruments... as a composer I would like to hear potential yet less common uses for the instruments.

You did not ask about mutes.

John Van Houten can surely play that pedal D as loud as you can hear.

Im sorry and no disrespect to Mr.Tornquist, i am very found of his work but i am very capable of playing all of my pedals at a fortissimo and relatively in tune. I beg my orchestra teacher to play something that requires me to play at such a low register and my teacher knows i can deliver.

Yes but you can't screw up or clam notes in the pros or you get fired. It's not about whether you can do it, it's more about consistency. I'm glad you are aware of your skills in the low register, but the point really is to be a team player. Not showcase your skills for the whole world. But being able to deliver at the lower register will make your job easier to support the orchestra. Remember, the person with the best low register wins the job.

I appreciate the knowledge, but what is wrong with the tubist? Such a boring player. It dragged the interview (er) to agony. :/
