Phenomenal craftsmanship. No tape on the top of those joists is going to create water trapped between the composite and tops of the joists though and rot them out even though they’re pressure treated. Just replaced 3 on my uncle’s deck because of that.

Decking should never be staggered between only two joists, the decking is what gives the deck shear, so without it lapping at least three different joists (ideally more) it will pivot on those two joists and twist out of square. If it twists too much it can even cause the deck to collapse.

I’m just wondering where the tape is going over the floor joist before the composite decking goes on. Without the tape on their overtime it will rot.
@hausplans
@hausplans Жыл бұрын
This deck is completely covered by a roof. Also, I’m not sure I buy into the tape over the joists. It’s pressure treated lumber that’s rated to make contact with the ground. I have replaced decking on decks that are over 30 years old with no tape and no roof above and the joists were still perfect. We actually put the new decking right back on them. This may vary depending on the climate, but we just don’t seem to have a problem with ducks choice rotting in our area.

@@mowman7777 wood can be painted too I understand the allure of composite, but just go wood. You are gonna appreciate the savings in cost today. Keep up with the very inexpensive maintenance. When wood starts to rot, it will be easy to replace the bad ones, we will get you 30 years out of a deck Conposite is good too, but the hidden fastener clips do not hold the material down as well, and thus do not provide the same ridgity to the structure. Composite with its flexible nature is unforgiving of the crowns in the joists.

I saw a video where the carpenter put sheathing tape on the top of the floor joist to help prevent rottttttt.
@Tool_Addicted_Carpenter
@Tool_Addicted_Carpenter 2 жыл бұрын
They do sell specific joist tape in addition to the various flashing tapes(zip tape, vycor, blue skin, 3M, etc) but it's all fairly expensive so an economical route to take is to buy a roll of tar paper and use a sawzall to cut a few ~2" rolls off of the 36" roll and staple it on to the joists. This works well because you can also cut ~3-5" sections to cap off your double rim joists and triple girders. There's a give-take though because joist tape is the proper width and sticky so while you're spending a little extra, you're also saving the labor of cutting and stapling. There's a debate as to use joist tape or not when installing wooden decking because it's said that the moisture transfer between the joists and the decking is better than trapping the moisture solely between the tape and the decking itself, which can lead to cupping. In this case, he's using a scalloped decking, which is cheaper, but also allows for more air flow and the joists will inherently remain dryer because they'll dry out quicker after rain or snow. I love construction, but I refer to it as an industry of endless variables, especially when remodeling. Alright I'm done lol

I've had multiple tiers of Milwaukee tapes from $15-35 and they were all terrible. Project Farm does a great head to head and Milwaukee was particularly awful in the durability tests. Lost almost all of its paint whereas many others stood up well. People need to be careful with their blind loyalty to the red brand, the company takes advantage of that and puts out some very sub par tools. I've had some significant issues with some of my M18 and M12 tools in only a matter of months whereas I've had some DeWalt and Makita tools pushing a decade old that operate as expected and just won't quit.

your right. You should probably go clean that up. We won't have time considering we're off to do another deck.

Small potatoes among other things. If you'd like to boycott environmentally unfriendly practices then I guess you're not allowed to wear clothing, shoes, purchase electronics, vehicles, or eat meat. Don't forget to walk everywhere. I guess the only logical route for you is to join a self sustaining vegetarian nudist commune. Let us know how that works out.

Well considering a lot of these composite products are made out of recycled plastics, I would say it cancels the those shavings out

If only you would have put flashing tape on the joists

No one does in our area, recently took a look at a deck in our area that is 35 years old and every pressure treated joist is still in perfect condition with no tape

It's nowhere near as necessary with scalloped decking. There's a lot of air flow and they will dry out very quickly. Hardly any trapped moisture.

I wouldn't love cutting this stuff making millions of pieces of microplastic every single job but I guess PT or tropical hardwoods have their own downsides that are less simple to remedy with a vacuum.

Deck looks good but no L flashing up against the house. Need to step up your game with high quality details that make a big difference

@@hackcarpenter5671 I can already tell your a hack at best. It’s L flashing and it doesn’t matter it’s has open ends. His work is clean but it needs to be flashed

@@hackcarpenter5671 Look at the letters L and Z two different types of flashing. L for decks roofs etc. Z for windows trim boards etc. Have any other stupid comments or questions ?
@hackcarpenter5671
@hackcarpenter5671 2 жыл бұрын
@@hillybill6092 actually it goes down the wall across the ledger and about a quarter inch down the ledger. Because it's a z. and there is a round house in lake Geneva Wisconsin with a beam system and trim package that would make you beg me to bless you with some of this game. and that's not the only multi million dollar home I've framed then trimmed. So next time you call sombody a hack make sure you know what you're talking about.
@hackcarpenter5671
@hackcarpenter5671 2 жыл бұрын
@@hillybill6092 also the L flashing your referring to on a roof is actually referred to as roof to wall. And it's not a L either. It has a bend on the front side so the ice and snow doesn't rip it off. I swear you guys remodel your mom's bathroom one time and all the sudden you're experts.
