This video is about how to create Composition Eye Movement and setting up a still life painting along with landscape oil painting and How to Create good composition using the elements light and shadow. How to use the effects of light, How to Apply the Golden Mean. How to oil paint and how to make a masterpiece using En Plein Air or Alla Prima. Plein air and alla prima artist Stefan Baumann, host of the PBS painting series “The Grand View, America’s National Park through the eyes of an artist” and author of “Observations Of Art and Nature,” travels in his vintage travel trailer painting America’s western landscape. Baumann paints outdoors with oils and canvas capturing stunning vistas, wildlife, western landscapes, National Parks and still life, thrilling art collectors throughout the world. He has many international collectors acquiring his paintings as investments. His painting style is called Romantic Realism with Luminism, and the extraordinary way he captures the effect of light is a truly American style used to paint the Western landscape. He can be seen plein air painting in Yellowstone, Yosemite and in the Grand Canyon. Baumann’s “how to paint” DVDs filmed on location in the National Parks are the very best on the market.

@@NiboCarnival Oh, sorry, Buchi, NO WAY! STEPHAN's greatest gift to us is his sacrificial self-LESS GIVING of INfORMATION to help sooooo many --- like me!!! I've seen art --- copious volumes of art- been to famous ART GALLERIES different countries ----; but listening to STEPHAN HAS MADE ALLLLL THE DIFFERENCE 🖌️❣️🤸🏿‍♀️🎨❣️ Seeing does not help understand WHY IT POPS or why it's spectacular, etc but STEPHAN's teaching DOES! Stefan, love your videos. Can't believe the amount of free high-quality content you are posting. It's very generous of you. I'm dedicating the balance of my life to painting (just turned 59, former graphic designer), and watching your videos and putting the lessons into practice. Just built my shadowbox out of some plywood boards, flat black paint, and L brackets and rewatching this video. I hope to be able to meet you and take a class with you one of these days. Thanks again!

Great video as always. I loved the demo and how you've set up the still life. I will use the advice in my next painting. Positioning in the right, 90% shadow vs 10% light, golden mean positions, light coming from the left and helping the eye magnet direction, and using the fabric to bring it all together, what a joy to watch. Thank you Mr. Baumann.

I'm going to have to look up and practice the Golden meme. I've heard of it, and I have a rough idea of it, but I don't know it really. Thank you for this very important instruction. LIGHT/SHADOW the language of the artist. It is incredibly helpful, and you really are the best art instructor because you help draw out the creativity of the artist. It's not just technique. I've seen plenty technique videos. I've also seen a lot of paintings that were technically good, but boring. I don't think I'll be painting boring paintings anymore, so thank you :-) I LOVE painting!

I'm getting ready to attempt my first still life, your video is excellent information! I picked some beautiful colorful peppers from my garden today that I want to use as my subject. Do the same rules apply when selecting proportion and size that you paint your subject that apply when painting a portrait? In other words, is it wrong to paint vegetables larger than life size?

Question. How would you put the main focal point in a setup were something is lit up like the sun or a candle but your main focal point is in the middle like that pot? You know like if there’s something that we humans know is bright in nature but it’s not the main focus.

You're teaching what I've always observed about the old masters is their use of light and shadow. Very purposeful, often with much of the painting being quite dark but the illumination being in a very concentrated area, leading your eye through the painting like a seeing eye dog leads the blind. Excellent way to convey the information in a way that makes sense. Thank you!
