This is the next vid in the composition series. The main point I wanted to show is how to balance negative and positive shapes. Too often, compositions fail because there is an equal balance of negative to positive space. This can work sometimes, very well too... But in environments, especially epic scenes, it's usually better to have either positive or negative space dominate. Anyway... More to come in the next few days, so be sure you're subscribed so you don't miss out!

Ahahaha, this is amazing. When you reversed the colors on the white-at-the-top, black-at-the-bottom image, I really did feel the uncomfortable sensation you described. But then I started picturing the white as snow-covered ground and the black as the night sky, which made it pleasant again... and then you reversed it AGAIN and it started feeling uncomfortable again. This is so great.

Thanks so much, I've never really sat down and really thought about this. I've heard of this concept before and had a grasp on it, however, you answered some unanswered questions.

It's probably best to avoid ambiguous imagery in your composition unless that is the intention. Any piece of art can be interpreted inversely with focus (for instance, the dot in the middle of the page could be the "negative" space), but in general the intended subjects should occupy the positive realm at first glance. If you have two elements competing for the viewer's interpretation as the main subject, that is poor composition unless it is the intent of the piece.

More of a silhouette then a portrait, but good explanations and demonstrations. Was helpful and cleverly understandable.

Yeah that's a good example of how negative and positive spaces can switch depending on what is the 'thing' and what is the space around the 'thing'. I really should find a better word instead of 'thing' though... 'subject'? lol... I think people know what I mean though...
