Geoff has something unusual to show you - a compost heap that produces heat to provide free hot water for showers. This process, known as pyrolysis, involves the organisms in the heap generating heat that is used to warm the water in a plastic irrigation pipe that runs through the heap. By using 150 meters of hose, you can enjoy a five minute shower and the water will be hot again in just five minutes. This system can provide free hot water for six to eight weeks and at the end, you'll have two cubic meters of high-quality fertilizer.
To keep the heat inside, we cover the heap to protect it from rain. If you go inside the heap, you'll find the hot water pipes and see steam rising from them. By creating a larger heap, like the 10 cubic meter heaps Jean Pain famously researched, you can generate enough hot water to heat your home and grow a year's supply of food. This is the power of compost, combining physics and biology to create an efficient system.
Key Takeaways:
- A compost heap can be used to produce free hot water for showers using pyrolysis.
- The heat is generated by organisms in the heap and is used to warm water in plastic irrigation pipes.
- A 150-meter hose can provide 5-minute showers with hot water replenished in 5 minutes.
- The system can provide free hot water for 6-8 weeks and yields 2 cubic meters of high-quality fertilizer.
- The heap should be covered to protect it from rain and retain heat.
- Larger heaps can generate enough hot water to heat homes and grow food.

Geoff has dedicated his life to spreading permaculture design across the globe and inspiring people to take care of the earth, each other and to return the surplus.
About Permaculture:
Permaculture integrates land, resources, people, and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no-waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics, and community development.

Great video . I'm trying to make hot compost to heat my biogas digesters. The digesters make enough biogas to power my small gas generator. My food scraps power things are my house pretty cool.
