The towers and metal rings saved my compost piles and my back... I just fill them to the brim wirh kitchen scraps, chicken bedding, weeds, etc. and layering worms and then sift the wonderful vermicompost 2 or 3 months later. A win-win technique. Great to see someone doing the same.

I was buying some fertilizer for citrus and in less than a year the price increased 20%. Good incentive to start making compost.

Hi Joe & Di Great video, explained the topic very well, composting is often a daunting thing, I stopped putting in egg shells as I had rodents visiting, so I now bake them for slug barriers or you can feed them to the hens for extra calcium, we put small gauge wire on the bottom of the bins for extra protection, I see you dont turn the contents of the bin, just leave it, I do the same, as turning it a big job, I turn the big pallet bins we have, moving the stuff from the top to the bottom of the next bin,

I get my neighbor's to drop off thier garden waste and then I compost it. Without that, I'd never get enough material to make all the compost I need.

ps out here in desert...somewhat same system but more of open compost bins quicker to load with various materials...collect urine nightly and add to this open pile for nitrogen and moisture..and during hot summer or times of no rain will water heavy and place wet cardboard pieces over to retain moisture in piles..you are a much tighter and higher functioning gardening couple and i like your organization and efficency-:) would say some more but we be in different realities...here very sparse population and very limited access to any community let alone allotment gardens...different mind set..so sad its a wonderful way for old folks to harmonize in and with nature...plus more fun than tv

Rather than wait 'till it's completely full and then leaving it for 6-8 months to break down before using it, can it be taken from the bottom hatch IE, does the older waste at the bottom turn into compost earlier.
@joedisallotmentskitchengar8390
@joedisallotmentskitchengar8390 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely Marie the longer you leave it to decompose the better but there is no reason that you can't start removing from the bottom hatch and create more space for more de-compostable material.

Hi Guys we are busy with our allotment and garden at the moment, very curious what zone means we are living in Bebington on the Wirral so north west. Only had the Allotments for a short time a couple of years, the garden which is large about a fifth of an acre garden & house has been ours since the house was built in the mid fifties, so very fortunate , we have always been Organic in our garden, obviously the allotment we cannot be sure about? Anyway lotsof questions for you and stuff to tell but just wanted to connect with you organic allotment gardeners who seem to be doing a grade job wonderful so thank you, glad I found you. take care Jenny & Kenny

Thanks for connecting Jenny and Kenny. Zones relate to first and last frost dates and you are probably in zone 9A. Wow a fifth of an acre provides a lot of growing area. Happy to help in anyway we can. Take care and happy gardening Di and Joe

When compost has access to the soil and is warm enough worms will naturally appear and breed so your compost will be a mixture of worm casts and broken down organic matter

Hi! Thank you for your sharing. I think your worms want to go out to the bin. They need oxygen and less moist.

Glossy magazines contain toxic metal residues and should not be composted but newspapers use non-toxic vegetable based inks
