I allow my chickens to go through my compost. I will lose some earth worms and the grubs, but they do all the turning and when they are through the leaves and straw and banana peels and manure will be broken down. There are always some worms and worm eggs in the compost and usually the only work for me is putting the material in and cleaning the compost out.

Would you recommend having a separe compost bin for grubs bug ? And do these grub bug have the same rules for worms or can they be feed meat, dairy and citrus ?

Great overview! I have done a small compost sample bin and recently saw grubs in there when I added goat manure to it. All videos which I saw mentioned that they are pest to roots. You are the only one who mentioned that they help in breaking down (like the other red wriggler worms). My question - then whenever I take out the compost and mix with soil , Will the grubs/eggs not start reproducing in the soil and damage my plant roots ? Your answer will certainly help at this stage. Please do give an elaborate answer. Thankyou in advance

So he didn't answer .... maybe I can help....just my thoughts...I'm new to a lot of this myself....If I was in your shoes....and I kinda am being that one of my compost piles does have some grubs....here's some options : if you have chickens well, there ya go....spread it out all over there run.... the grubs will get be good eating and any subsequent larvae that make it will probably get eaten as well.... maybe do an experimental garden on a secluded section?? Take some seed that you've been saving that you can readily get easy like cantaloupe???.that way if it's a wash it's not a huge loss....or wait till this summer and recompost everything in the HOT HOT sun so as to destroy any possible eggs.....I'm not an expert...these are just some of my ideas....just trying to help

After composting for 2 years, this was my 1st experience having grubs in my compost bin and I had quite a bit of them. Freak me out, I did know if they were cutworms or grubs. Based on your photo that's exactly what I had. Based on your experiences sounds like that they can be beneficial to the compos. My compost was cooking but obviously not hot enough to kill them.

This is what I’ve observed but I cannot say it will be the same for you so take what I say with a grain of salt. I have added these scrubs to my garden beds with no issue at all of them eating root systems or anything else that is not rotting already. My observation is they only eat dead or dying plant matter.

I had these beetle grubs in my garden, they love coffee waste, mostly coffee chaff. They are bigger than Japanese beetle. The green fruit beetle (Cotinis mutabilis) is a large metallic beetle (1.25 inch long) with a scarab shape. The larval stage is a C-shaped, creamy white grub, which feeds on decaying organic material in the soil, such as piles of manure, partially decomposed compost, or piles of lawn clippings. Adult beetles emerge in summer and feed on soft, ripe fruit such as tomatoes, peaches, plums, figs, and apricots. When fruit is ripe, they literally cover it feeding in large groups. The grubs do not damage fruit. Photos of all life stages are included on the web version of this column (see URL below). cals.arizona.edu/yavapai/anr/hort/byg/archive/greenfruitbeetle.html

+Alice what you could do his test it. Try and see if you can put some veggies in a container and grow them with these grubs in it. Make sure to feed the grubs rotting plant matter while they're in the container and see if they eat the rotting versus the fresh;)

I collected the rotten, sponge-like material of a rotten tree log, crushed it with my hands and put it into a box and added 30 white grubs. When they will have eaten it through I should end up with kind of fungal dominated vermicast, right? Does the poop of these white grubs contain Chitin, so that it has also properties like insect frass?

Ok thx . Great use for these creatures. I'm composting a lot in my outdoor row and so I found also a lot of May beetle larvae. I thought they were in kind of a hibernation state and gave them away to chicken owners. After I watched your videos I also watched some about people in Africa who eat a not so different looking variety and how they get them in palm tree logs. Awesome.that I learned that they do compost here and that they prefer woody material bc worms can't break that down so well. Now when a May beetle is crashing I catch it and put it into my bin so that it can lay eggs. When I'll have enough then I'll use some as bait for fishing. Thx a lot man!

@@homefarmideas I have a few chickens now and so I expanded my grub composting. In most bins I let worms and grubs work together - works great. I like to give my worms crushed Neem leaves as it's healthy for them. Unfortunately Neem made the grubs sick and finally killed them (tried it in 2 bins) so now I will use it only in 100% worm bins. I watched a few videos about your guppies. I have guppies too. Lately I cleaned out some outdoor lamps with fluorescent bulbs. They attract small insects that die there. I tried this coarse powder of insects feeding the guppies and it was a success - the guppies love it! I put the powder in a plastic tomato sauce bottle and the guppies get a few puffs everyday :-)
