Compound Bow vs. Deer Skull

primitivepathw... Can a compound bow take down a deer with a headshot if it's right below your stand and that's the only option? In this experiment I join bowhunter Savannah Ashbey and we test the penetration of a 60-lb compound bow on a fresh deer skull to see if her bow can generate enough force to take a deer if it's underneath your stand and a headshot is the only option. We test a broadhead and a field point at a range of 15 feet.

Great comparison/demonstration video. I don't think many bowhunters thought that this could kill a deer. I had questioned it. This definitely helped answer some questions.

I once shot a spike blacktail buck from a tree stand through the head using my Excaliber Exomax (225 pounds) crossbow and an Excaliber Bolt Cutter broadhead at a distance of about 12 yards. The arrow went completely through the skull and embedded itself in the soil. The deer fell as if shot by a gun; it never knew what hit it.

Damb!!! I hadn't ever given it thought to try that shot, like say when deer is hidden except it's head. I've drobbed deer in there tracks with my bow after a frontal shot.

Me too actually! I've harvested deer with broadheads stuck in other bones but never a skull.

It's awesome that she is shooting a bow that is actually a decent weight for a more experienced archer. I think it's crazy that 60 lbs is considered a heavy bow these days I cannot even find a recurve that has a higher draw weight than 60 lbs ( if anyone can find a recurve with a 90 to 125lb draw weight plz send a link) that being said she is a complete bad ass considering the fact that I have several adult male friends that can't even pull my 60 lbs. I do understand that with modern technology you dont need as much draw weight to hunt but as a 250 lb man child that practices archery at least weekly but doesnt hunt (not against it at all i just dont have the heart to kill an animal while i have a full belly) i want to see what kind of stuff i can shoot through with a 160+ lb bow made with modern technology.

I can tell you from experience if you shoot a live deer in that spot it will stand there and look at you like nothing happened.
