Guidance for comprehensive antenatal care for a better pregnancy outcome by Prof (Dr) Masuma Rizvi, Head of Department, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Government Medical College, Srinagar
Pregnancy is a critical period that requires careful attention to the health of both the mother and the baby. Here are some key tips and precautions:
1. Nutrition
Recommended Foods:
Protein: Lean meats, eggs, beans, and lentils help support fetal growth.
Iron: Dark leafy greens, fortified cereals, and red meat prevent anemia.
Calcium: Almonds, and tofu strengthen bones and teeth.
Folic Acid: Spinach, citrus fruits, and whole grains reduce the risk of neural tube defects.
Foods to Avoid:
Raw or undercooked foods: Avoid raw meats, fish, and eggs to prevent infections like toxoplasmosis and salmonella.
Unpasteurized dairy: Can increase the risk of listeriosis.
2. Exercise
Benefits of Moderate Activity:
Enhances circulation and reduces swelling. Eases back pain and boosts mood.
Safe Exercises:
Walking 30 minutes per day.
Avoid: High-impact sports, heavy lifting, and activities with a high risk of falling.
3. Weight Management
Follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations for weight gain based on your pre-pregnancy BMI.
Avoid crash diets; instead, focus on balanced nutrition to prevent complications like gestational diabetes and preeclampsia.
4. Regular Prenatal Checkups
Attend all scheduled appointments to monitor your baby’s growth and detect potential issues early. Routine ultrasounds and blood tests are crucial for tracking the pregnancy’s progress.
5. Avoid Harmful Substances
Smoking: Increases the risk of low birth weight, preterm delivery, and developmental issues.
Medications and drugs: Always consult your doctor before taking any medicine.
Radiation: Avoid x-rays unless absolutely necessary.
6. Sleep and Rest
Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
7. Monitor Baby Movements
Start tracking fetal movements during the second trimester. Report any noticeable decrease in activity to your doctor immediately.
8. Hydration
Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily to stay hydrated, maintain amniotic fluid levels, and lower the risk of preterm labor.
9. Vaccinations
Keep up with recommended vaccines like the flu shot etc to protect both you and your baby from infections.
10. Workplace and Environmental Safety
Avoid exposure to harmful chemicals, heavy lifting, or physically demanding tasks. Take regular breaks if sitting or standing for long periods, and practice proper posture.
11. Emotional and Mental Health
Stay connected with supportive family and friends. Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or deep breathing. Seek professional help if you experience persistent anxiety, stress, or depression.
By following these guidelines and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider, pregnant women can ensure a healthy and safe journey towards childbirth.
