this is very helpful. the tip about wax alone is gold. but also cleanup with same or smaller bit and note texture so it doesn't vary throughout the piece unintentionally. great tips nobody else gives. i am doing chemotherapy and have a lot of downtime where intense fine detail work with my hands would be a wonderful distraction. i ordered a grinding tool and stand and portable desktop bench with vice and dog holes, jewelers anvil and some small chasing and peening hammers. going to turn some of our household items into family heirlooms/folk art, as well as form, flame paint, engrave and mount copper oak and maple leaves. none of it will be great art. but it will enrich my surroundings and create some pieces with sentimental value to my family.

Very cool. I had no idea that this was still a thing. Back when I was doing it in the late 80s and early 90s there were relatively few people engraving art this way. Most of my work appears on black granite headstones in cemeteries. Rotary engravers were too expensive back then so I started with a $5 ordinary engraver (similar to the one at 35:40 but much cheaper). Nowadays the rotary engravers are much more affordable, but each still has its use. You can use the other engraver exactly as you would the rotary style. The primary difference is that it doesn't engrave to the same depths or with the same speed. Still, I've created elaborate pieces with it. This video just happened to pop up in my feed even though I wasn't searching for anything to do with engraving. I've not checked your channel yet to see what else you've produced, but I bet your audience would find a video about painting engravings to be interesting. You may have already made one. Painting really brought the engravings to the next level. Some of mine are still out there, full color, 30+ years later. A little faded from the outdoor environment, but they've held up better than expected. Great vid. Nice to see the enthusiasm for the art form in the comments below.

Would you be interested in creating a tutorial on how you convert images to your traceable format? Maybe discuss a bit about what parts of your stencil you'll be removing and what you're looking for when deciding if an image would be a good fit for creating a stencil? Thanks very much! A good starting point is any Dremel carbide cutting burrs. Get several sizes of the ballpoints and practice some linework. Work on keeping your hand steady and controlling texture.

These have been some of the most informative and inspirational videos on the engraving. It's really gotten a hold of me and I'm going to be starting on it. How do you charge and how are you getting the colors so vividly different? I'm truly passionate about motorcycles and that's the direction I'd love to go in time, but not limiting to.

What is the advantage when doing lines of pushing away from you instead of pulling towards you?

If it’s steel definitely clear coat the work to stop rust if aluminium not necessarily as it doesn’t rust but does oxidise so May be worth doing too if exposed to the elements.

Great video, i have just got a cheap wireles rotary tool with all the accessories but it just jumps about and its very hard to control, would that be as the RPM being to low? Im going to get a second hand demel 3000 i think as that seems the best bet with the hand attachment like you're using, i had no idea you had to use wax and didnt think about it hewting up and wearing the. Down. I have so much to learn. I just want to customise old ipod back cases, the metal ones. As i buy and repair them etc. i want to do engrave different music artists logos or names. The lubing part ive never seen people mention before so thanks and nice work. Oh snd also i never even thought about eye protrction too. Stupid.me.
