In this video I once again "virtually preserve" a forgotten old product. In this case even when it came out it was probably very unknown. This is the Schneider Boston from 1993. The first HiFi system with a GUI (Graphical User Interface). I honor their efforts...

Schneider: I've heard of them, and I'm from the UK. Way back in the 1980s we had an Amstrad computer. Amstrad was a brand that pivoted from affordable hifi to computers. I'd heard that Amstrad computers were distributed in German by Schneider under the Schneider brand. So it makes _total_ sense that Schneider would be an affordable hifi company.

@@joinedupjonFor the same reason you can't find quality new manufacture machines for so many other audio formats: Compact cassette is obsolete. Even CDs are obsolete at this point. Most people are happy with streaming music from their phones, TVs, etc. Most enthusiasts are happy with buying lossless audio downloads. Compact cassette would need to become popular again the way vinyl has to support an industry producing new, high quality cassette decks. Compounding the issue, most compact cassette enthusiasts probably already have good cassette decks. New manufacture would have to compete with the used market.

I love this channel. It's mostly random irrelevant facts about obscure technology, but presented in so ridiculously high quality that it captivates me every time. The high resolution footage, the crisp narration, the quirky music - it all fits together so well. I keep thinking back to a stereo system that I used to have, Panasonic SA-AK45 (took me a while to find the exact model). It had so many lights and buttons and an auto-changing CD tray... though I mostly used it as aux amplifier and never touched most of its functions. And the design of the whole thing just screamed "Y2K". These videos give off a similar vibe, showcasing how cool these systems were in their time.

I think its interesting that a German company's premier product line was named after another country, namely, America / the US. I wonder why they made that choice? Perhaps in reference to the cultural domination of American media exports, or a sense of being the 'center' of 'the west' and NATO? I wonder what sorts of other examples there are of this sort of naming scheme applied elsewhere.

I think it goes back to WWII, which after german self-esteem dropped down significantly. Everything that came from America was valued as supreme, be it bubble gum, coke, nylons and everything the scarce german industry could not provide. Even the pop music went english, it was usual for german bands to sing english for decades. Branding this device as american, made it top notch quality.

Back in the early 80s, when I could just about afford a "decent" stereo system (born in 71, so...yeah, I wasn't exactly loaded at 12/13 yrs old!) I found my "dream system" in a Schneider brochure. While the system in question might have been available to order (in the UK), most of the products in the brochure were Germany-only models 😥 By the early 80s, all the brands that used to make decent "music centres" (horizontal, turntable/tuner/cass/amp) had given up on "quality" systems, and only made budget models. Panasonic made some INCREDIBLE music centres, so did Sony, and a bunch of others, but by the time I could afford one, Dolby/manual rec levels/magnetic cartridge/etc, my "minimum specs", had all been abandoned, and "auto record level/ceramic cartridge" horrors were all that could be found. Progress, huh?! Aside from ... SCHNEIDER! That brochure, with its tantalizing selection of basically-unavailable products, contained what was probably the very last "hifi-quality" music centre. It had a Dual turntable (I think), mag cart., Dolby, rec level meters/controls, and I think the tuner was digital (another dream feature in those days!). OMG how I lusted after that little system...though I'd never even seen one in real life, let alone heard one!! Sadly, it wasn't too long before Schneider also abandoned quality and became a bit of a cheap-and-nasty brand, not as bad as our very own Amstrad (puke!) but nothing like the Schneider of old. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they quit making stuff entirely and just became a brand, slapping their name onto cheap, imported tat. Totally unrelated, but I think that same brochure had a wind-up radio, called the Schneider Turny, yet somehow, many years later, there was an "invention" called the BayGen wind-up radio that won tons of awards. I think the Turny was more like a dynamo charging a NiCad battery, rather than "clockwork", but essentially it's the same bloody invention, no?! Well, in any case, I think Schneider got there first! At 53 yrs of age, it kinda sucks that I now have the money to buy all the things I wanted when I was younger...and now that I have the $$, these things are no longer available, or simply obsolete. 😭 I do have some of these things, like a Sony TC-D5M cassette recorder, and an AIWA CS-880 "ghetto blaster", but I needed them 40 years ago, not now! Lol. I woulda been the coolest kid at school with my CS-880! 😄😄😄 Now, to most people, I'm just a geek. 😭

Even the Revox Evolution you showed briefly wasn’t necessarily the first graphic screen based stereo system. That goes to the Revox B250, but only equipped with a B200 and a B210 remote, which has a graphical screen, although it’s used only for displaying text and some symbols. Also, you need to have the components connected via the system link cable, so the B200 can pull the data and transmit it to the B210. In case, you want to get such a system, go for the black version with the S suffix, the early original silver B250 might not have an up to date firmware (so it won’t communicate with the B200 - don’t ask me how I know) Btw, the RDS function responsible for displaying the name of the radio station isn’t Radio Text, but PS or Program Service. RT is used for displaying the song name, contact information or just the station’s slogan.

someone in late 90s in Schneider was addicted to the technology than money I guess. Schneider was the german manufacturer (or maybe distributer only) of Amstrad 8bit computers those days. I am curious about who is?

Another amazing video!! Loving the use of the backdrop in this! Very glad it didn't get crushed by it though...

(1:09) That flip-out display already brought me back memories of a rental car in the late 2000s which had a fancy aftermarket Sony Xplod head unit, which unlike newer Sony head units that just have a screen on the front, the main unit was instead a 1 DIN unit that connected via composite video (I think) to a 1 DIN flip-out display! (3:35) That reminded me of the Philips Streamium system, which I only knew about because of an old Computer Chronicles episode that showed one of the first models. I think the original Philips cloud services for those had already shut down a long time ago, but like what I had seen with the Logitech Squeezebox* system, there may be unofficial servers or server apps for those. * Logitech were nice enough to keep their cloud services running for as long as they could until they finally had to shut them down, which likely also helped for the developers behind Logitech Music Server (the unofficial app I mentioned). Edit: I forgot to mention that the 640×200 display resolution reminded me of Windows CE palmtops.

Lions love vintage half toned text. Can't do that anymore without processing bitmaps.

Schneider is no company, they are are a relabel company.... Most stuff is cheapo nonsense.. But some units are cool.. Like that Boston(plus).... It's a look alike Sansui but for 1/3rd of their price...

This channel inspired me to search for legitimate Dutch bike. Now I am proud owner of 2001 Gazelle Gold Line Touché AirGlider. Thank you, Posy, this bike is a blast.
