Last year, it took me about 5 months after graduation to find my first (and current) SE job, it was definitely a bit depressing but holding out was worth it. Using that time to work on a couple of projects to put on my CV helped a lot, especially with the interview. It's a tough market but if you're legitimately interested in this career, you'll definitely find something. It helps a lot to remain optimistic. I read a book called "why you?" which helped immensely with the HR portion of the interview, it helped me pass my first ever in-person interview first time. (Yeah, it was my first interview in those 5 months so I'm very glad I got the job lol) Though this is all becoming relevant to me again as I'm planning on switching jobs. My current one is quite decent but a bit boring/not within my interest domain. Anyways, thanks for the video!

Good to hear you found success bro, and yeah, I think a lot of the pessimism comes from people who have no interest in software beyond the paycheck. The market might not be as good as in the past but if you genuinely want to do it for a living you'll probably find something down the line, I agree.

tl;dr cs isn't just swe jobs. its a huge field, broaden your horizons and you will be surprised how accessible some of these jobs are. only looking at the most competitive positions is setting yourself up for failure. Maybe this sounds like I have my head up my ass a bit, but my biggest issue with this whole ordeal is that Computer Science is a huge major, and you hinted at it, but people don't really comprehend that. You mentioned dozens of SWE adjacent jobs, but CS literally encompasses so many other things, including stuff like databases, finance, mechanical engineering, robotics, a/v production, applied sciences, research, gaming, IT, cloud, etc etc etc. Like the stuff you're doing with Osaka OS encompasses a lot of skills beyond SWE. I understand that most of the clout of CS is getting a SWE-adjacent MAANG or savvy startup scholarship, then using that to propell you into your full time career, but those days are mostly over, and honestly that career path is really only for a certain type of person given the sheer grueling nature of it, given the prevalence of SDLC frameworks like scrum and shit. For me I have probably have a bit of a chip on my shoulder since I took wayyy longer than all of my peers to get a degree due to being affected by COVID really badly and having to pay for my school out of pocket and work a full time job while balancing my studies, but that gave me perspective that 1. trades/labour is not a better alternative for most people, and 2. There's plenty of ways you can get your foot in the door without even being in a directly CS related job. The tech industry is going to continue growing, and yeah AI is going to cannibalize a little bit of that, but my greatest advice is to please broaden your horizons of jobs past SWE that still use your CS degree. Otherwise you're going to be disappointed when you don't get any of those crazy competitive SWE jobs, or when you do you're going to be exhausted and dead being worked to the bone with garbage management and regret everything

u sound kinda like moistcritical I wouldn't worry that much about AI but ppl who aren't using it to help them program boilerplate stuff faster (or to learn, not cheat on assignments but like, have it explain shit, personal tutor style) are kinda throwing imo. Either way tho if ur serious enough to be making ur own OS or any other decent personal project that actually does something irl u don't need to worry lol

Your point about not specializing in a specific domain hit too close home. I got into cs purely because I wasn't passionate about anything and I thought "hey I use computers all day so might as well make money doing that". Throughout my undergrad years I never bothered learning anything other than the bare minimum (mostly basic algorithms and web dev stuff, since web development is kinda the "default" path for programmers these days) While I was lucky enough to land a Java web backend job, I eventually realized I was way more passionate about hardware related "low level" stuff like operating systems, firmware, embedded etc. Currently learning C++, computer architecture and OS stuff in my free time (which is how I came across your channel) hoping to make a shift to a field related to that. Wish I didn't messed around in university and used the opportunity to focus on these things but oh well.

damn this hits close to home. going to graduate next year (if I don't dropout/get kicked out before that) and i think I'll never get a job in this field. your stuff is really inspiring, because the only thing that is interesting for me in programming are small projects with no real use outside of being a stupid cool thing i wanted to do in the moment. and that being said I can't even do basic programmes and lack fundamental knowledge on a lot of stuff. it's weird. ig it's fair that hobbies can't be jobs unless you grind like crazy, which i lack passion for to do so. appreciate ur vids a lot

I wouldn't say never, but every situation is based on your own unique circumstances and environment. I would say its smart to not put all your eggs in one basket but that doesn't mean you still can't try and apply to internships/jobs while also preparing a plan B if you can't get any. CS also has a lot of overlap with Computer Engineering, and to a lesser extent, Electrical Engineering. It might be possible to change your major to one of these or something that will accept most of your credits, but that's up to you. Whatever you want to do, I hope you find success in it, and thank you for watching my stuff.

I managed through the video even though I wanted to stop it all the way since it hits too close to home. I did the proper things, went to a top uni, got relatively good grades, passionate, a few projects. I hope I'll get a job in the next few months but no matter the situation it'll all feel pretty random for me.

I want to do CS because I enjoy it… not because it’s a high-paying job. I think that’s the issue with a lot of these people, they choose a career path simply because it pays but without any enjoyment.

I majored in Electrical Engineering which requires some CS and now work as a full time back-end developer. In EE you must learn ASM, must learn C++, must learn about basic CPU circuit design, and most likely learn Python. I also took electives in DSA, AI, analog circuits and encryption. It gives you a foundation that CS majors will not have, it will challenge you more, and most importantly it will give you career flexibility. You take six courses per semester in EE so I basically see a CS Bachelors as an Associates. "Four courses per semester?! Lol go get a real degree!"

I'm doing CS right now and I see engineering people work 10x harder so I have to somewhat agree with you. At least in my uni, we are required to take some courses in basic CPU circuit design (alongside ASM) and I remember that being one of the most challenging courses so far.

Really appreciated this cut through the BS take. There's a lot of polarization that happens with the doomerism; and I have an inverse experience in that I came from an enterprise level only then to go on to complete my internship at a lower level. So being able to retroactively apply, it's really nice to see people being able to provide something for young devs! Cheers for your much needed message!

Competence is based on competition. Not a lot of competition, there is very high chance of being perceived as more competence and vice versa when it comes to jobs.

Thank you so Much for this video,im glad to see a take that is'nt just Doom and Gloom but also is'nt Sunshine ane Rainbow The issues you talked about really resonated with me,the whole Ai thing makes me Anxious about finding a decent Job I First entered Comp sci when i turned 18 and didn't know what to do in Life, i discovered i really really Enjoy Progamming and i would like to work on it(i admit i still have a lot to learn other than the basics...) I knew that it wasn't going to be easy and simple like getting a Degree and boom get hired. But the reason i want to keep going is because i like it,i don't expect a Six figure on my first job My current plan is to find an internship, then aim for swe or cyberSec jobs, while coding side projects Sorry for the long Ass vent,im Just happy to know im not alone in this,i think you have a good chance of finding a nice Job, because Progamming an Os i such an insane task that shows your skill level

I just read it and thought it was interesting, there's pretty much no hiding from bad actors given they have enough resources. A lot of computer security doesn't really seem to rely on super smart software to prevent bad people from wrongful access, but rather that the bad people in question don't have the resources or time to realistically do anything. (its pretty much what we entirely rely on cryptographic security for) If you wanna hide from the US/Chinese/Russian/Israeli Government completely, your only option is to pretty much stop using computers and just go straight nomad lol. This is why osakaOS will have the compiler built directly into the kernel, this way they have to compile the kernel with a bad compiler and in the process clone my repo, which secretly contains 13TB of hyper-compressed crypto-mining malware =^)

A lot of this is very surface level, based on vibes, and I’ve stopped 1/3 through the video. Also, maybe do a second take on these videos instead of writing a revised statement in text at the top.
