VeraCrypt can make "plausibly deniable" hidden volumes and operating systems. As long as you implement it correctly, you could just use a decent honey-pot on the visible OS and volumes, so that if extorted you can simply hand that over, and your hidden, encrypted, plausibly deniable operating system and data can remain safe. So, an ORWL + VeraCrypt could make an "impenetrable" system. There are of course certain malware that can transmit data over the power lines by manipulating processor cycles. So, if your system is compromised through user neglect (i.e., social engineering taking advantage of lack of education about the system) and malware is installed, it's still possible to get data out of the system depending on the privilege level granted to the malware. So, "Hello, this is 1984 calling, we need your administrator password because we're issuing OTA updates to the microcode and each system must be targeted manually to avoid data loss." Bingo. Payload delivered. Any sysadmin thinking of making their job easier with these is going to bungle it when the security environment is compromised by the user.

@@Shadethewolfy They said that it'll nuke the code if it detects drastic changes in temp, if it overheats and shuts down I would think that won't be an issue. I think it's about how quickly the change in temp occurs. If it sees that a temp drop of 50c in 4 seconds that's more of a red flag, I would think, than the same change over an hour. I could be wrong though and I'm not about to spend 2k just to test it out

Mark Alvarado ugh I'd hate the system for the fact: 1-moving a giant file to an external drive and walking out of range. That not only shuts off the machine but could corrupt the drive/file due to the usb power/data being shut off(example would be getting a paper from the printer in another room). 2- I like to repaste my cpu's everycouple of years with this system I'd have to make sure I had an external backup to restore it after repasting the thermal psste because the encryption key is deleted.

Some of the Chaos Computer Conference videos talks I was referring to earlier: media.ccc.de/v/34c3-8782-intel_me_myths_and_reality media.ccc.de/v/34c3-9056-bringing_linux_back_to_server_boot_roms_with_nerf_and_heads media.ccc.de/v/33c3-8314-bootstraping_a_slightly_more_secure_laptop kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH6oe3aCjZeXqtk

I could add a feature that monitors my vitals so it self destructs as soon as I'm under duress or as soon as there's a time lapse in the vitals monitoring chip I had implanted. Don't try to MITM that, it uses a private 4096-bit previously shared key, perfect forward secrecy, highest bit level of the most secure encryption standard publicly known. 32 byte fully randomized password is stored on the chip; I don't know it. Tamper with the chip's connection to me or my vitals, and it will self destruct. What's being guarded will not be worth the time to get it. 20 to 25 bytes would probably take past the end of time to brute force using every molecule in the universe. Definitely way past the end of my lifetime if you employ every cycle of every computing device created by then.

Password managers aren't actually that secure, especially LastPass, 1password etc. In concept they aren't secure, but in reality it's better than using the same passwords for many things, or loosing a password etc. In essence password managers work because we are humans after all not robots. With a password manager you just have to rely your trust more places, not less, and if someone is able to access your password manager, then worst case scenario.

You can't have your password stolen, if you are giving your password away yourself ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) On a more serious note, it's hard for anybody to get into a password manager databse, they'd have to get your master password and / or the database key (if you use one). I recommend Keypass and sync the database using Syncthing (non-cloud based sync app). What I'm more worried about is keyloggers that can get passwords out of clipboard (when copy-pasting from a password manager) and screen recorders that can see the password if I'm not copy-pasting, but writing it directly from my screen. Of course, if I would be that worried about having my passwords stolen, I'd get a device that can't be accessed without a master password and a physical key (like a usb stick), lock it inside a box and enter my passwords manually whenever I need to insert a password, but I'm not that huge a tinfoil hat wearer, I copy-paste from Keypass and use Syncthing to sync between Arch Linux, Windows and Android.

If it uses Bluetooth security, it has to be constantly open to data coming from the frequencies used for Bluetooth. Seems like that in itself is a potential security breach, and that isn't even considering spoofing the signal. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't deleting/encrypting informarion take time? Even if this computer is faster than most, couldn't you save most of the information if you nailed/screwed through the battery really fast (like less than 5 seconds)? Also, if the sensors recalibrate, there's a potential exploit right there to trick the machine into letting you freeze it anyways. If they don't recalibrate, won't random bugs from a sensor just kill the computer even though it wasn't tampered with? This also assumes the information on the computer is valuable enough to go to the trouble of protecting but also something you would be willing to destroy to keep out of another persons hands. That's true for nuclear codes, but what about your bitcoin wallet or something? If your computer is the only machine with access, geting it stolen or self destructing still means you loose the money. Not much consolation the theif didn't get it either. It's only really practical for something you already have stored elsewhere but you want a second convenient access that is still secure. That's pretty niche. Also, if someone goes to the trouble of stealing a computer for the info on it, that's one thing. But regular hackers during regular use could potentially compromise the system that way via traditional online hacking. If the computer also is programmed to react to software tampering, that presents another problem. A data burglar might want the data intact, but some hackers will destroy a computer for the heck of it. The more sensitive it is to tampering, the more secure it is, but that also makes it more likely an innocent disruption will set it off and destroy the owner's data. Its like putting a bomb in a bank vault. It doesn't save the money, it's more of a screw-you to the theif.

Deleting the key would be fast, but there has to be some security checks before, so some very fast press like smashinator 5 million, with properly sized circle punch probably has a chance to cut the baterry out before key gets lost. Interesting idea :)

Honestly that's genius putting a bomb in a bank volt. Forget the money the fact that the theif is gone makes it worth it. I'd consider whoever implements that a hero.

They should solder the SSD to the board as well so that if anybody does get their hands on it they don't also get a free M.2. That way they won't have your data and they won't have anything to resell or use for themselves.

Anything soldered can be desoldered. You can also design a small PCB, have it manufactured in China (it's cheap, I do it for my own projects), solder the stolen chip(s) to it and use it all together as a regular M.2 SSD in another computer, no big deal. Soldering is protection only for RAM so you can't get the key from it even if you freeze the RAM because to unsolder it you have to heat it up which would make it lose data. I just hope Linus put wrong photo of the RAM in the video and manufacturer actually used BGA package because if the pins are sticking on the sides as seen in the video then RAM can be probed with test clips and they solved nothing soldering the RAM to the PCB.

@xSeRosiSx 6 жыл бұрын
Who would go to those lengths for an SSD? If they had the tools, know-how, and time you'd think they could simply afford to buy a new M.2 whenever they wanted. And if you saw in the video the data was already gone before they even got the cover off. If we are to believe the caption. Again, why make it easy for the thief to get free things in this case? Difficulty is the deterrent.

So basically. Load a USB drive with whatever script you want to steal the data. ( a Wi-Fi usb if you're really trying ) and plug it when no one is looking. Yes even if the device has powered off the ports. Them just wait. Once the user returns your hack is done while the system is on and the keys are being used. Still nice for security but there is ALWAYS a way around.

No, it simply clears itself making the encrypted data inaccessible. It's basically like a secure erase formatting, so you can open it up etc without problem just that you'll lose your stuff on it.

FelixG yea. But he point is that sometimes that's enough to fuck with you. It's so easy to destroy data on this device, it's almost a design flaw
@FelixG

It's not a design flaw as it was literally designed for that exact purpose. This is not a product meant for people who have friends who try to brick their devices.
