The IBM system/38 was launched in 1979 and included a relational database as part of the base system. Also, Larry Ellison worked for IBM before he started Oracle.

The database application program is my favorite thing to use, thanks to Microsoft Access 2021 that I do use. It can become somewhat friendly for the user, even one who does not have a computer programming background. The Computer History Museum show is too short to watch.

Interesting they never mentioned Sybase? They were the leaders in the early mid 90s until ASE 10 came out

and Microsoft got a start in databases through Sybase and a licensing deal that left them with free use of ASE 4.2 (then still called SQL Server)
