I definitely recommend getting a greater shaleback when starting a new game, but after that, pets are really just for fun. Sadly, even the best pet follower can't compete with even a mid game Thrall.

To level up Thralls and Pets fast from 1 - 20 Kill the following things in this order. 1. Imps 2. Shalebacks 3. Crocodiles 4. Komodo Dragons 5. Grey Apes that walk up right on their two feet. All of these things can be found on Noob River. This will also level your character from 1 to 40 If you need lots of bones Shalebacks and Crocodiles give the most bones and have the highest chance of giving them with a pick. On the Isle of Siptah map crocodiles and red crested lacerta lizards on the beaches will level your character from 1 - 40 just by killing 30 of them. Your pets and thralls will level from 1 - 20 by doing the same thing. After killing everything if you skin everything as you kill it then it will add to the XP and make it go up faster.

@@GamerHobo Yeah the lacerta lizards will raise the XP bar half way for each one killed.

it seems backward to me that you have to complete the Thrall Taker journey to unlock the Beast Master journey, as the animal pen requires basic materials but the Wheel of Pain is more "advanced"

I agree. Makes more sense to me to start with a pet. I enjoy using the shaleback as my bodyguard for a while when starting a new playthrough before moving up to a named fighter thrall.
