I like in this story that Thoth-Amon has snake eyes.

I know this is a Conan channel, but it would be great if you branched off one day to cover Howard's other works. One of my favorite writers of all time.

What I love the most of Robert E Howard's Conan stories is how his character grows throughout the stories like how he is in tower of the elephant and rogues in the house he's Savage n a theif but by beyond the black River and people of the black circle he's more smarter retrospective still cunning but when he steals too more complex n by the time he's king how he's grown love it Conan really grows through out Howard's Conan stories. I also love the atmosphere Robert E Howard brings to all his stories makes his worlds feel real and authentic.

"They were surprised CONAN was not fully sleep but awake and ready to meet them with fury" omg how hardcore is that! And that background music is so CONAN it fits the story. What is that warrior music 💪👍💪

It's interesting how Conan has TWO instances of the gods (Mitra in both cases) being directed by Divine Intervention. Its also interesting to note how this is the closest Thoth-Amon and Conan met. This really could have been a prologue for a novel that could have set up Conan's rule as king. Shame ol Bobby Texas never got around to writing more.
@pendantblade63612 жыл бұрын
On another note, as much as I adore Dark Horse's take on Conan, I do wished Conan wore armor in the comic as he did in the original story. Armor protects you, by Crom!

I just read this as my first Conan story, been wanting to for a long time, so it's great your doing these great deep dives now and have a bunch of episodes in the bag! I really enjoyed the story, though I'd already read Kull's "By this Axe" so it had a weird deja vu to it, like all the conspirators reincarnated to make the same mistake! But Howard never thought that Kull would ever be published, and I think he rather improved on it, it's momentum, the little hints of world building, it's dark mysticism that ironically saves Conan, (I wonder how it read before those editorial revisions). I laughed at how Dion isn't listening to the "slave" and casually tells him he has his precious ring he'd been monologuing about.
@crazyscotsman9327 Жыл бұрын
I kinda like the Kull one more. With Kull showing kindness, and care for his subjects. Him being bound in by these laws written in stone. And at the end him smashing it with the axe he defended himself with. And using it to remind everyone that he rules not traditions. Is definitely a great story. It really drew my attention and got me interested in listening to more of the Kull stories.
@MagusMarquillin Жыл бұрын
@@crazyscotsman9327 I think since it was the nearly the last Kull in the Del Ray collection, and the thing where Kull helping out the young lovers who can't be together was an odd repeating trope in his stories, and was slightly tired by that time. Then the resolution of "I am the Law" was a little iffy to me; sure it serves justice _this_ time, but it sets a bit of a bad precedent to future dictator kings - which may make a good story...maybe it's tied to the end of Valusia - but it felt more like this was Howard's idea of a good solution the way it was told. Since Conan didn't have that, I had some more hope for Aquilonia. All in all, I thought the writing was tighter in Phoenix on the Sword, and the supernatural twists livened up the story. Mostly though, Kull's stories are really good reads (my first of Robert Howard) and not so much in Conan's shadow as By this Axe.

Love your videos man. You weave so much good stuff into them; excerpts, music, comics/images, letters from publishers, quotes, and your own very insightful notes. Oh…and your very fun readings haha, can’t forget that. Anyhow, I just read this story for the first time and some goober on Goodreads rated the story 3/5 and mediocre. To me, this story is exceptional and so much fun. The only problem I can find with the story is the one that the publisher noted which is that in the beginning, I felt lost and as if I was being pelted with too many names and other information that wasn’t easily digested.

This is great! I have but one quibble. Actually the Conan stories are NOT in the public domain. Cabinet owned the rights and may have sold them on to Funcom, I'm not sure of the specifics of the deal. But the works are definitely NOT public domain.

Think about this, there is a school of thought that suggests that the Conan stories could be considered "historic fiction". I'd like to know what you think, agree or disagree?
@MrGunwitch Жыл бұрын
Disagree. Historic fiction has to accurately depict a specific time/location from history. The story is imagined but the setting is not. Howard’s Hyborian Age is a fictional setting that is inspired by, but distinct from, real world history.
@MrGunwitch Жыл бұрын
I’ve never had much time for comics but the artist’s depiction of Thoth Amon is a poor one. He’s meant to be dark skinned and a giant…a black, heavyset ‘eunuch’ type look would be more appropriate.
