Join archaeologists for a discussion about how people 4,500-3,000 years ago thought of the cosmos, their place in it and why this mattered to them.
Chaired by Dr Jill Cook (British Museum), this discussion explores some of the potential meanings encapsulated in the monuments and objects of the world of Stonehenge. Cook will be joined by Prof Timothy Darvill, who'll focus on how late Neolithic people embedded a calendar into the sarsen structures at Stonehenge. He'll explore where the idea of such a calendar might have come from, how it might have worked and why one might have been needed.
They'll also be joined by Prof Dr Harald Meller (Director of the State Museum of Prehistory, at Halle, Germany) to discuss the importance of the Nebra Sky Disc to our understanding of the imagination and concepts of those living some 3,600 years ago. The scientific findings about the Nebra Sky Disc make it a key find in European prehistory, astronomy and early religious history. Recent research on the object itself and on the early Bronze Age in central Germany point to a far-reaching trade and communication network and provide exciting insights into the social structure of early Bronze Age society in Central Germany.
This event is part of the public programme accompanying The world of Stonehenge at the British Museum (17 February - 17 July 2022).

Weapons of gold could only be ceremonial in nature as gold is too soft to make useable weapons.

A lot of mention about spiritual use, but the simplest explanation would be farming and agriculture. Similar stone rings are found in early civilizations in modern Turkey and Syria - why are they not mentioned?

Hello, there are very many burial mounds in very close proximity to the main Stonehenge circle, yet very little information on their purpose, the extent of previous excavations or potential future exploration of these mounds. Is there a reason for it?

A connection , a cultural link between Stonehenge and the nebra disk can be imagined. The nebra disk is the property of a Druid from that region in germany. The druids were not exclusively native to the British isles...

The upward curve of trilithons as shown plan view of Stonehenge looks remarkably like the Nebra sky disc "sun ship". Are they representing the same solar cosmological understanding.

The sky disc is clearly not an accurate depiction of the sky.

Clearly it is. It accurately depicts the stars in Gemini, Orion's club and Taurus at the dawn horizon when the bottom of the disk is aligned with the horizon.

I believe, the concept of "squaring the circle" is misunderstood - and would be easier to understand by calling it "squaring the sphere"... It's not a question of "area" - because "area" is a consequence of "spacetime" - and THAT is "squaring the sphere"... We experience "life" in 3D - because "speed of light" is the same in all "directions"... We interpret life in 2D - because we inter-lock the axis of "up/down" by aligning our individual experience around a shared center of attention (align our "rotation")... So when interacting, we use a 2D-definition to align our 3D-experience - by interlocking one axis... The interlocking creates an "entanglement" between the "observer" and the "observed" - relative to eachother - because any "observation" requires the "position" of both... "Speed of light" defines how far our "vision" extends - "c squared" defines our perspective on a 2D-map with 4 Cardinalpoints (North, South, East, West)... And the "squaring the sphere"-part comes when changing perspective from 2D to 3D - by connecting the dots diagonally as well - creating a "tetrahedron" (around which a sphere can be drawn)... Thus changing "position" into "volume" (or "space")... So "squaring the sphere" is how we collectively interpret our individual experiences... Changing "analog" into "digital" to create a point of common reference... Changing "front, back, left and right" into "North, South, East and West" - ensuring a fixed "direction in time" - and a shared "down", because we'd all "fall" with the "speed of acceleration" towards the same point in "spacetime" (the "Black Sun")... The line between the "Black" and the "Bright" suns, define "noon" - which we use to align our individual experience of "time" (defined by the "date-line")... The oscillation between 3D and 2D - between "experience" and "interpretation"... "space" = "time" / "position" or "mass" = "Energy" / "c squared" Mandelbrot defines the restictions of our perspective, to define a "boundary" between "Energy" and "mass"... A "boundary" making "space" an imprint of "time" - seen from opposite perspectives - requirering both to exist... There is no "either/or" - or "right/wrong" - because it's all "both/and", making both "right" AND "wrong" - relative to the perspective of the "observation"... It's our rationality, creating the perspective of "flat Earth" - while we emotionally "sense" the "spheric" nature of "life"... But our "rationality" will never be nothing, but a sub-set of our emotional ("sensed") experience... However without it, we wouldn't be able to interact with eachother... Thus the "sun-worship"...

Squaring the circle comes from the old geometric problem to construct solely with a circle and a ruler a square of the same area than a given circle. Only in the 19th century, there was the discovery that all numbers you can construct geometrically with circle and ruler are algebraic numbers (roots of rational polynomials). And the number Pi is not algebraic, thus proving that the squaring of the circle is impossible.
