Thanks for this Brad. I used to be a studio musician, It was hard to stay afloat and certainly my work was not stable enough to support my family. After almost a full year without being able to get any work, I decided to try out web development, I went online and bought up a bunch of second hand programming books and studied like crazy and taught myself. There weren't as many great tutorials like the ones you provide now, it was really the only way. Ive been a programmer now for almost 10 years, but I always struggle with the feeling of swimming in place, there is so much learning and studying that needs to be done outside of actually working and making money. Luckily Im passionate about it and enjoy learning, but sometimes I feel like I'm not actually smart enough to be doing what I'm doing. Videos like this make me feel less alone, if that makes sense.

dl-phenylalanine helps restore dopamine in neurotransmitters dis-regulated by addictions. L-tryptophan restores serotonin. GABA and l-theanine restores GABA. Beware of excess glutamate caused by stress, poor nutrition, and excessive stimulants. Magnesium, potassium, zinc, and a proper multi-vitamin with organic ingredients are also incredibly helpful. After basic nutrition, sleep, and exercise you can add herbs, spices, and mushrooms. I love using lion's mane mushroom and rhodiola rosea for studying/working and some chamomile tea with passion flower for relaxation/sleep. Hope this isn't too late and it helps you out.

Brad, you are an angel. I like when you say: I learnt things in college that I don't use today. I was a computer engineer (way back). In college, I enjoyed the knack of programming but there were hardly any good instructors like you are. The problem in industry is that they are highly specific and do not understand a programmer's pain and struggle to master all these technologies. You will have to bear the pain of a turndown as you have spent time in one language, but the job is in another. All the time, and even today, I am overwhelmed by the number of things in this tech world. I switched to marketing and sales. Not enjoying it. So basically turning back to programming - atleast I know some parts of it I enjoy it like addiction. But even after learning or mastering a few things, I am not sure if I will be able to find a job in the industry. The pace at which a new framework comes is lightening. I am not good at learning :( , so on that side I know even in programming I am in wrong industry. Your videos give me the strength to continue in programming. Thank you for making them available.

Sorry guys, here is the link to Jeffrey's talk kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3XSpYZrd6mkiK8 Also, please don't take my view on college as it being a complete waste of time. I can guess that those of you that worked your ass off for 4 years may take that in a weird way. I am just not happy about what I have seen from cs programs and I wish they would improve them. And I only have my own experiences, knowledge and research to go on. Im sure for some people it may be the best thing that they ever did.

I have been building web sites for a number of years on and off and have played around with various technologies. My biggest issue trying to get back into it is that so many tutorials videos and other help sites just seem to repeat the same thing. Not saying it isn't good information (I really enjoy your tutorials and have learned a lot from them), but I am trying to use CSS to put my wife's designs (she is a graphic artist with 20+ years experience) onto the web. I watched several of Jen Simmons talks on web design and am really trying to do things that don't fall into the same layout templates that most sights are built on. Really wish I had the time and money to do a boot camp to go deeper, but as a full-time IT professional I have to pay the bills.

I really like Brad's no-nonsense, blue collar, every day Joe take on web development. I find it comforting to hear someone with Brad's knowledge talk about concerns and struggles I've actually had. I hope to see more of this. I have a Master's Degree in CIS but when I got my first job in the industry I only had an Associate degree. College helped me get my foot in the door because the career counselor at my school got me my first interview appointment that resulted in a job. Nothing in the core curriculum for my major, or at least very little, have I used on the job, the exception being a foundation in computer science. I do believe that college helps with soft skills, business writing, and liberal arts courses are good for producing more well-rounded, cultured individuals, however, if we are discussing only web development in a vacuum, it's not terribly useful. Having said that, I can't tell you how many self-taught developers I've met over the years that don't have any foundation whatsoever. They have learned to do things by wrote but they have no idea about why or how it works, just that if I type the following characters it will do the thing I want. I can't stress enough that this is someone you should avoid becoming. If college courses in programming are good for anything, it's foundation, though it is absolutely possible to get a foundation without it, it's just not common in my experience.

I've had some observations of my own being a developer for a little while now and maybe offer a different side of this topic. To a beginner, I would say that learning to code can be easier than you think it is. Its really about solving problems and once you get the hang of reading the syntax and writing your own, very small programs, you'll see that this is true and that most everybody can do it. Adding things like Unit Testing and separating your concerns will help to pull your code together and give you confidence to carry on :). The things that I've seen professionals struggle with in this profession is ultimately bureaucracy and workload. It seems like many businesses struggle to find out where software developers/engineers really fit in the big picture of the company. It can be that mgmnt or teams can over commit to projects or add additional 'hoops' to jump through in order to prove their worth to executives and business units which provide the devs their work. You can also have it where some teams are hellbent on being on the bleeding edge and anything else won't do. Teams like this fall into trouble when the new tools that they use fail to produce or realize that not everyone on the team or in mgmnt shares the same views as they do on what it means to be effective or can lose sight of what matters at most companies which is what the customer wants. Most professionals already understand that its in their best interest to keep up with new tools and processes to make their job easier and to help write better code. Trying to change the team using rogue tactics can have a 'hunger games' effect on the rest of the team and heighten the imposter syndrome for newcomers. Developers of all skill levels are going to be open to take on new tools and processes anyway so make sure to avoid the brute force mentality and instead work together.

Thanks for this kind of video.. in fact for all your videos. I've been programming since 83. Did some web projects but at the end of 2015 I was asked to work on a controller for a Train training simulator. I chose WPF and it has gone really well. Lately, I've been trying to catch up on all the latest web tech. and being feeling overwhelmed. Looks like web programming is the way to go for future apps. This year I hope to dive into Electron(for tools), PWA(for cross-platform mobile apps), vue.js(to keep things simple) and keep my .net work for the backend. I can relate to many of the concerns & struggles of a developer. A professor once said, "keep learning the new stuff".

I got 2 “D’s” in my programming courses in college. Found no jobs. Switched industries. Back to programming. Learned and understand much more last 3 months in “tutorial hell”. Doing 2-3 projects now thru Udemy and Brad’s courses. Hunting for a job in 2-3 months. Expect $100k and more in NY. Very tough to do right now because I work full time more 12 hours a day. Learning lots from Brad and Udemy. Most definitely a cultural mindset lingers “If it’s cheap, it’s probably not worth it”. Yes, people think that even that way about learning technology. So they feel compelled to “spend more or college” to get a feel of being better educated. I tried to convince others and find doubtful this approach of online cheap courses. Even though they are the information generation, they still college is the only way. To each it’s own. I suck at math too. Lol. You are an inspiration Brad!!! Merry Christmas!!

I'd like to add a few things. Internships can be paid, and paid very well for certain positions. You're most likely not working for a startup if you're entry-level, as they won't have resources available to further train you like the large companies will have. Additionally, be careful about working for outsourcing companies or for contract positions, which can pay well but can be very unrewarding.

I used the think the same way as you about "useful courses" in college but writing, public speaking, philosophy and psychology may have been the most important courses I took. At some point even in software you have to write, and you have to make presentations, or interact with people at some level. Philosophy and psychology teach you to have an open mind and so you can think about things intellectually, and we really need intellectualism in this day in age.
