Hi everyone, I believe this was one of the dress rehearsals before our concert tour. As you can hear, I needed to stand closer to the microphone, and we quickly got the balance figured out. Our conductors tend to let the band play, even on thickly scored accompaniments like this one, knowing that the soloists are reinforced by the mic. Mics are necessary for us because of the wide variety of venues we play in...it's impossible to plan ahead for a completely different acoustic environment each day. I've been burned in the past having a mic too close to the clarinet, and sounding overly bright, buzzy, etc--but that was with people who didn't know their stuff--our sound guys are great. You can see from some of the side views how far my instrument was from the microphone--I needed to be more like 12 inches away. Obviously, dynamic contrast, musical ideas, don't come across very well here, but it is a live performance so hopefully there's still some value to having it on youtube!

I've always enjoyed listening to military musicians, so to hear a complete clarinet solo is really a big treat! The soloist are usually so disciplined & talented. I wish the microphone were a little louder, but other than that, this performance is absolutely wonderful!

sad to see so many people giving trouble to the clarinet player, you were great man. I am also practicing this piece for a solo contest and I only hope I can get it as clean as you did.

the soloist gets overwhelmed so much by the band though..the soloist had great american clarinet tone, but overall the band lacks a passion,it should be more expressive than plain army march style..

either he needs to the microphone closer or...just to play louder. I've heard players who weren't "soldiers" play with much more gusto...just saying..

T. Jordan I attribute it to his setup. You can tell he uses a way too closed mouthpiece for this stuff. Fine for concert band but not soloing.
@anthonyflanders1347

There are plenty of soloists that use closed setups. I would attribute this to a recording problem
