In this video you will see a very rare Savoyard from the German company Polyphon made around 1880 - 1900 in Leipzig. It is a polychrome terracotta statue representing a organ grinder setting in motion a music box with interchangeable disks of 40 cm in the shape of a little theater in which monkeys (a violin player and two dancers) are animated.
This Savoyard style 100 is a very rare version. The current version (simple box with decorative organ pipes) is represented by 5 or 6 examples in the United States.
When you insert a coin in the slot located above the music box, the Savoyard automaton is activated and you can listen to 5 melodies: "The jewel song" from the Faust by Charles Gounod, "The waltz of the roses" by Oliver Métra, "The skaters' waltz" by Emile Waldteufel, "Silent night" by F. X. Gruber and "Nos petits volontaires" by Messler (stereo recording).
