I loved all of the points that you made in your video, and I'd like to offer a unique-ish perspective on this that I have. When I went to see Amon Amarth on their tour with Entombed, the venue had the metal detectors and pat-downs that you reference in here (in addition to the manager coming out to tell the line not to bring in fake weapons). On one hand, I did really appreciate feeling safe in the venue, especially given the small and close size and after the shit that's been happening in so many places lately. On the other hand, I am a trans woman, and whilst I pass as female and look female to the people doing the patting down, I also have not had "the surgery" down there, which is something that gets noticed when being patted down. So in one line, I seem very out of place, and in the other, they notice something that shouldn't be there and get freaked out or suspicious. Whilst the people patting me down that time were cool and didn't really raise any questions, it has made me hesitant about going back to that venue, because what if I were to have someone who's an asshole and just wanted to be a dick to me about it, or someone who would legit be concerned and take me out of line, which could either be humiliating or could delay me from seeing whatever the show is or getting merch? So idk, I feel like that's another factor that could affect people like me and should be considered. Do I know what to do about it? Hell naw. But is it worth discussion? I think so.

Definitely a necessity. They can be annoying, but I've seen enough people bragging that they managed to bring weapon to a venue. Metal community is usually more or less sane, but alcohol is alcohol, and I don't want a drunk armed fucko in the pit.

Once at a concert i was in the pit and it got pretty aggressive and im pretty short and weak, i got thrown to the ground cause i was shoved and for about 30 seconds i was thrown around until some guy helped me up and pulled out and asked if i was ok (i had cuts and stuff) and he stayed with me until i stopped shaking. both sides of things.... some venues may have little choice on how they are situated (i.e. band dressing room by the can), its possible it is how the place is laid out when it is purchased and it is often not economically feasible to move shit around. also, sometime s places that seem like shitholes have to be used as venues (as opposed to other places in same city) due to licensing restrictions or due to the city tolerating shows on certain streets or in certain parts of town only. Now having a girl by a mens restroom doesnt seem like a sound business choice; having ANY security working a metal show that have no experience at metal shows, or security that looks like they belong at a hip hop show at a metal show...thats poor management.

I saw Ghoul at a venue that doesn’t allow stage diving and people were getting kicked out cause of stage diving and fights but GET THIS three days after that GBH were playing when that came about the crowd was waaaaayyyy to rowdy for security to kick stage divers out!!!!

The worst part about security grabbing crowd surfers at festivals is when the PULL them to the other side of the barricade instead of waiting till they're all the way in the front. It causes lots of injuries and pressing on the back of the head. My nose was once crushed cuz some security guard pulled a crowd surfer that was BEHIND ME and my face was pushed against my arm leaning on the barricade.

I saw Green Jello in Janaury and got to be part of the show. They needed volunteers to put on masks and go up on the stage with them. Kind of a low budget GWAR thing. I originally got a Venom mask. Me and most of my friends were chosen. To be fair, I met half of them that night. Went up on the stage and got to dance around and bumb shoulders with them on stage with the band. Then they had a massive puppet mosh pit. We all were walked off the stage to take part. Everyone in the place started moshing, and we were pretty much blindfolded in those huge masks. Before this, one of the bouncers was being a real prick and had threatened to kick us out for moshing. We weren't going all that hard, more of a lighter mosh. A lot of people gave up and we're taking off the masks, leaving them on the ground or giving them to other people because they couldn't see. I stepped on the Cowgod mask in the middle of the pit, and immediately throw off the Venom mask and put on the Cowgod one. I started kicking the ground and charging people wearing the mask, mostly going after my friends. Large mask with nearly two feet of cushion at the top making up the head. It was a great time. Then they asked me, the Cowgod, to come up on stage. They played, "Obey the Cowgod," and everyone got to bask in my glory. I got to be worshipped as a god from the stage. After the show show, I asked the guitar player if me and my friend could go back stage so I could get a picture with Bill Manspeaker as the Cowgod. He went backstage to ask Bill, and he was fine with it. As we we're going, the bouncer stopped us and refused to let us enter even though we were invited in and we were with the guitar player and he refused to give us a reason. The guy was being a prick the entire night. One of the other staff members even told us jokingly that they taught he may be bipolar because he can be one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet at times, and at others you just want to punch him out. I think he was pissed of about there being a mosh pit at a metal show. The guitar player told us Bill would meet us out there, but I had to leave before he came out to go to work. The venue was giving away free tickets for an upcoming show as I was leaving. A bunch of cover bands were playing. Went to that, and as I walked in, the same bouncer apologized for being such an asshole at the Green Jello show and told me it was okay if I moshed. And some phycho tried to poke my friend's eye out at that show

I’ve felt the same way for awhile. Security is a mixed bag. I saw Clutch in a more high end venue and when some moshing occurred, security was grabbing people and being overall extremely aggressive. I understand venues not wanting moshing but if the show is Metal/Hardcore, guess what? Moshing will be there. Lovely video!

I've only been to three and haven't had many problems. Really the extent of any security being needed around me was with mosh pits, not necessarily because people were being dumbass drunktards in them, more so because when I saw Overkill and Symphony X, I was but a mere 14 year old boy in 2015 who's probably the exact height I am today, 5'1, with a mom who needs to protect me from getting hurt. I believe there may have been security behind us to keep me and her safe, though regardless if there was any, at least some of the audience there was also trying to be somewhat careful. Thankfully the only pain I felt was a sore as fuck neck from thrash headbanging with Overkill. My mom didn't like it, Symphony X had soundchecking problems and she doesn't care for thrash all that much, but hey, I had fun and it was probably the best birthday present I've ever gotten to this day.

I agree with you on the whole "you have to leave immediately after the show ends" thing. I was at a I Set My Friends on Fire show, And the guitarist was trying to find me, because drove 17 hours to go to the show, and he just wanted to talk. I found him eventually, but the security guard was staring at me as I left. It was a little weird that he was staring at me, but hey, it was my first metal show, and first time moshing, so I guess there was more good than bad here.

At at the gates there was a guy headlocking people who bumped into him, we went to security and told them, they couldn't do anything, 3 or 4 of us grabbed him during one of his headlocks we got him to door security and told him what was going on. They told the band and I met the bassist and guitarists after the show and he thanked us for doing it, my phone died and I didnt get any pictures with them:(

dethmetalguy \m/ I saw Suffocation when I was 15 (still am as of posting this comment hehe) and being in the pit was actually a great experience. I got pushed around quite a bit of course, and I did get hit on the head a couple of times, but stuff like that is to be expected, and the hits I took weren't really that bad anyway. The people in the pit were very courteous as well, and when someone actually did get hurt they helped get him out of there right away to see if he was ok. My advice is to be prepared and know what you're in for, but don't be afraid of the other people around, because they're all there for the same reason you are. As for what to say to convince your dad, I don't have any ideas. Maybe you could pull something from my story as an example.

It is really easy to go to concerts and avoid going in the mosh pit. If you want to avoid getting shoved around, stand around the back to avoid the initial crowd explosion when they first take the stage and start playing. Gauge the crowd and judge whether you could handle yourself in the pit. Chances are if you don't have a large stature or substantial mass for your age (14) you will be overwhelmed. I was 14 when I went in my first mosh and ended up fine, but I had the build of a highschool football lineman so I was able to handle myself adequately. If you do decide to jump in, go with the flow and maintain your balance. More than likely you wont be shoved hard unless you are a bigger guy, otherwise the edge of the pit will usually prevent you from falling on your ass. Your dad speaks a bit of truth though; mosh pits are full of drunk people who occasionally do a bit of damage. Pits are rough, you will get hit if you stay in long enough, and even the biggest fit guys get knocked on their ass every once in a while. Maybe step in and mosh a little while after a mosh starts during a popular song (lets say 3/4 of the way through a song), since people get tired and the mosh inevitably loses a bit of its initial ferocity? There are many ways in which you could safely enter a mosh. Signed metalhead with more experience moshing than the poster of this video.

On of the local places where I live doesn't have crazy security and they even let you bring food and drink, leave and come back to the venue, and stay a while after the venue, they only really get angry if something like a fight happens but otherwise it's a sick ass venue

I personally always thank any security, staff and in some cases police officers for making sure everything goes as planned. Rarely have I ever had a bad experience because of security.

When I saw toxic Holocaust I remember security constantly running into the pit to carry out ppl who would get knocked out or seriously injured in the pit so props to them also when I saw overkill it was a really small venue and after the show the bar was still open and a couple security guards sat with me and a guy I had just met while in the pit during the show and he said he noticed how we tore it down and felt like taking off his uniform shirt and joining us in the pit

Yesterday I was at an open air show, and the concert was pretty mixed with metalheads and some mainstreamos. Then a pit went off right in front of the stage. Nothing brutal, like 8x8m. Some people, normies, were around and complained about it. Well, if you dont wanna be beneath a pit, don't go in the first line, and inform about the subculture you are visiting a concert of! Well, long story short, some of these didn't gave the pit the needed space and got bumped, not on purpose though. They called Security and they tried to prevent the moshpit, but they failed horribly. In the end, some of the older guys in the pit solved the thing and no one was throw out. All the security did was stand around and saying "stop dancing". It was damn funny. The security was totally obsolete.

One of the most fun pits I've been in was at a Havok show at Reggies in Chicago. The overall vibe was just everyone thrashing around having a good time. If you fell, thier were people picking you up, if you crashed into someone, they'd just push you back into the pit. Also I'm certain this place has security in the pit as well. Which was interesting. They threw out one douche who decided to go moshing with his beer and gets pissed because it was knocked all over him. The guy got way too aggressive and these dudes swarmed in and ushered him out. Fun times! I got a group pick with David Sanchez of Havok before the show.

My personal opinion on security in gigs and shows is this at the end of the day people what to have fun at a show and quite rightly two but what if things get out of hand and people get hurt injured or even in extreme cases death (especially when people start moshing) security is there to prevent that and to restore the Balence between what is exceptonal and not in shows (etc starting fight or being unessarly violet towards others) I'm all up for people having fun and letting there hair down but when you get to the point of actually causing more harm than good that is where people start to stop having fun and metal bands get a black mark to there name as I am pretty sure we are all aware of and its not that they have anything against you personally there just doing there job so I think that security is needed in shows and gigs purely for these reasons

Not being able to leave venues is going too far imo. On a side note I remember seeing Deicide in 2005 and some idiot stage dived (more like jumped) off the venue's upper balcony. The idiot dropped about 20 feet and thankfully fell infront of the mixing board but unfortunately fell on a group of people. What a total moron that guy was. It was at the Opera House in Toronto for anyone familiar with the venue. Also RIP Ralph Santolla.

I saw Death back in 91 and some asshole high on whatever was harrassing the girls there. Two huge security guards grabbed the guy took him into a backroom and beat the shit out of him. That was by far the most violent show ive ever been too.

Gods of Violence!!! Sorry, I lost it... I fucking love that album! I fucking love Kreator! Last saw them on their mini-tour in Austria in early April, seeing them again in Germany in early June, dying for that end of year European tour announcement to come. Yeah, I'm a bit obsessed. Juuust a little tiny bit... Anyway, on topic. I've experienced the whole spectrum with security at concerts. With some you just know crowd surfing and stage diving will be safe and they won't pocket stuff the band throws to sell on e-bay. When I saw Amon Amarth in 2011, the security guy in front of me happened to be a fan of the band as well and he still gave me a pick that fell in the pit because it was his job to do that. Those security guys were just the greatest. They actually have "here to help you" on their vests and you know you can count on them if you or your friends need water or something. But I've also been at shows where security people would beat crowd surfers. I ended up with a broken face when I saw Motörhead in Paris because I just happened to be in between the security guy and the crowd surfer he wanted to hit and I made the mistake of ducking the wrong way. And it's really shitty when they pocket stuff the band throws. Even worse when they ask you for an outrageous amount - think something like about $200 for a damn guitar pick. Not only is that such an assholish thing to do, but it's also incredibly moronic - I can just go see another show for that amount and, you know, have fun again. As for having to leave right after... ugh! Yes, that's seriously annoying, especially when you're with a bigger group. Some people like to have group pictures at the end as show memories. Sometimes we need a bit of time to sort out our stuff because I might leave some of my things in someone else's backpack for the duration of the show. And some shows are in the winter when it's damn cold outside and I just have a lot of layers to take back on at the end.

I know security can be a bit too over protective when it comes to being inspected at the door. I was at a pro wrestling show, I had a hat with a bandana on underneath. When security was checking people in, the person told me to take my hat off. Completely reasonable. Trying to make sure I’m not hiding anything. But then they asked me to take the bandana off as well. Now, the bandana wasn’t covering my entire head, I had it tied like this: i.ytimg.com/vi/Bl6in9DkF9w/maxresdefault.jpg It just struck me as out of place, because I’ve been to plenty of shows and never been asked to remove a bandana before. Idk, all I know is, it was a mild inconvenience to tie it back on when I was inside, lol.

Two days ago I went to go see municipal waste and it was my first time I'm twelve btw and My spot was all the way in the front I was handling it very well until municipal waste got on of course but it didn't get out of hand to badly there was stage diving which I handled very well everything was going so great I headbanged with a couple of people together everyone at the show was very nice My jeans fell off lol also when the moshing started somebody spilled their beer on me which I was ok with It was the greatest experience

I've never experienced any really bad security. It's usually been pretty spot on. But! I do remember a few shows, such as at the Underground in Omaha, NE where they had a guy who fit the profile of Lurch Adams Family to a 'T' and would just walk in, hook assholes under the arms and walk off with them (probably dropping them outside the venue, to being at the Amon Amarth show in Denver right after they legalized marijuana and seeing a few security guards peering down from the balcony at the packed crowd when a few puffs of smoke went up. One points like, "Should we go do something about that?" , the other watches, waits a few seconds, and just shakes his head and the show continued. No need to break everyones balls and fight through a packed crowd just to kick out a couple of stoners. So, I've seen some good/interesting security. None that have been awful.

The security where dimebag was at didnt stop them from killing dimebag. They are pretty -lazy- laid back there too. I can get in with anything. My friend got a cut on her head from being hit and he wouldn't even get her ice or anything and it was swelling. You can go outside etc etc. Not sure the point of the security.

Luckily, most of my experiences with metal show security has been positive. There's a club here in Phoenix called Club Red, most of the shows there are metal, rock, or punk, and their security is full time security that works for the club, not any kind of third party event staff. That being the case, the security guys look like they listen to metal and punk, and they obviously knows what goes on at those shows. I went and saw DRI at that club, and they were totally nice dudes, and we're more concerned with the middle aged lady who was definitely too drunk grinding on me rather than the pit. So yeah, totally necessary. However, with festivals, those are definitely hired event staff, and probably don't know the ins and outs of a metal show unless they've worked a few.
