I remember, I had heard some instrumental when I had entered my professor's room. I searched, searched and ended up in Pandit Shiv Kumar, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Nikhil Banarjee and finally Ustad Sultan Khan. Humans live on food, of course I too. But I started living more on these. Ustad ji's Sarangi makes my heart light and I wonder how it is reciprocating to my feelings, a kind of reflections of my feelings. An inexplicable emotion it is.

I had this double cassette in early 90, that I time was playimg Tabla day and night, I used wish, let me look like Zakir, Play like Zakir. He is God gifted very special. I have seen he is flawless. Sultan Khan sab is just like is extended family type personality. What a beautiful Raag and Tabla.

+Michael S its mainly just teen taal, the theka itself ( ((Taali) Dha Dhin Dhin Dha/ (Taali) Dha Dhin Dhin Dha/ (Khaali) Dha Tin Tin Na/ (Taali) Na Dhin Dhin Na/) with zakir's flavor and variations to it ), tukras, and kaidas im sure. probably tihai/laggi style bits also when he is given the ijazat. he is a superb accompaniment to ustad sultan khan.

+Michael S here is a nice kaida that Ustad Zakir Hussain plays often in teen taal: ( (Taali) Dha Dha TiDha GeNa DhaTi DhaGe DhinNa GeNa/ (Taali) DhaTi Dha TiDha GeNa DhaTi DhaGe TinNa KeNa/ (Khaali) Ta Ta TiTa Kena TaTi TaGe TinNa KeNa/ (Taali) DhaTi Dha TiDha GeNa DhaTi Dhage TinNa KeNa/ ) Each line from / to the next / is between a measure of 4 beats when played how you would the theka of teen taal. that's partially why i labeled taali and khaali for this as well. It's an old punjab gharana kaida i believe. Also meant to put Ustad*** Zakir's flavor in the last comment. lol gotta give him that respect he sure as hell worked and deserves it.

Zakir is amazing although heavy influence of Farukhabadi but also punjabi, his last half of gatkari, you might as well distinguish laggis lajjis, clear sawari & the tehaiis are surprising. I was surprised by his peshkarah, Qaidah & relahs are smooth, its not easy to accompany the Giant of sarangi, The Sultan ! mashallah !

I am looking for what seems to me as probably another part of this concert (I think it was the same background) in which Zakir Hussain is joined by another tabla player (Ustad Khan is also playing). At some point, Hussain scat-sings phrases and then both tabla players perform them together. If this rings any bells to anyone, please be my guest :)

Hi Spice D., in case you're still searching I think I recall seeing it. If the phrase Ustad Zakir Hussain opened with was something like "da daga daga da ... " and then the second phrase being something like a response with "daga daga da daga da da daa da" before both tabla players commenced to playing it. If that's the one you're thinking of, I'm pretty sure you'll find it with some searching under Zakir Hussain's name. Unfortunately I saw it about 7-10 years ago so I don't recall what the video was called.
