The Concertgewbouworkest never fails to brighten up my day! As a horn player I also want to say I love the balance in the horn section between the low and high players. Too often the lower horn disappears, or is asked to, and we lose something special from Brahms' thoughtful writing for the instrument which often has just as much interest coming from the harmonic support of the low horn as the principal's melody.

Wunderschöne und detaillierte Aufführung dieser perfekt komponierten Sinfonie mit gut harmonisierten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Instrumente. Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und echt melodisch. Der intelligente und unvergleichliche Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im flüssigen doch gut phrasierten Tempo und mit angenehmer Dynamik. Einfach wundervoll!

Tchaikovsky's 6th (The Pathétique) also ends pianissimo--indeed, it trails off into silence, mirroring the composer's own fate. Moreover, the codas are more or less identical in the 1st and 4th movements, just as in Brahms' 3rd. The difference is, the Russian prophesies personal (and artistic) martyrdom, whereas Brahms resurrects German symphonic music..

Marijn said the violinists are working on Bach. I wonder how many of them have learned the solo fugues or the Chaconne. Here she plays the (relatively) easier E- Major Partita.

dsm2240 just thought I’d chime in because I am actually also a violinist who’s been playing the same prelude during quarantine! The solo violon works, both the partitas and sonatas are standard violon répertoire. Basically everyone learns them while they’re quite young. But because of the sheer joy one gets in playing them and the cosmic scale of these works, they remain a rare artistic challenge for a violinist that reveals itself more and more with experience. So yes, she’s played those pieces you mentioned many times. Listen to Ysaye’s “obsession” which is an homage to Thibault who was apparently was known to spend long hours perfecting the E major prelude.

Is this really such an excellent conductor or is it more the lack of will (or guts) of the musicians and audience to stand out with a divergent and maybe even somewhat critical view. "He is considered excellent, so he must be excellent, so I will call him excellent too in order not to be considered stupid by everybody who says that he is excellent". To my humble opinion, too many of far too old and often far too vain and complacent gentlemen still are appreciated for the qualities they might have had in the past, or just because they are appreciated for being appreciated, while in the meantime taking the place of next generations of energetic and talented conductors and, while doing so, depriving this young generation from what I would call essential 'stage experience'. But I might be wrong. The way this conductor moves could be of the highest possible international level. However, with all due respect, I doubt that he -still- is the benchmark in conducting..

It is not because he is old. He is pulling out performances that can cause envy in a young conductor with more avant garde inclinations or even HIP or historical performers. You may be thinking in Haitink, late Abbado, late Wand... people who were rightly respected and fantastic performers in their prime but lacking something in the late years while people still try to push their late recordings as references to the following generations. I can not say the same with Blomstedt. He still has that something to inject into a performance, whatever it is. And any fan of big orchestral works would be a fool if he is stuck in the old era days that are still going on, because the recordings are still available, like the Beethoven sound of the Karajan-Berliners is what Beethoven compose and had in mind... So, I understand your concerns. But this man is not the right target.

Wonderfull conductor oh yes! But I have to complain about the 1st clarinet here- this is not the first time either. Why why can’t he try to fix the intonation? Why does he so often play to high? It simply destroys the performance! It destroys the woodwind section. The oboes are in tune but the clarinet/ s - no matter if he tryed to play musicaly as he does in a way - but it doesn’t project and very often he droppes the sound in the frase endings - it just goes away. Why? A spread sound which allso is high do not do it for me - sorry. I miss the old clarinet section

I am listening while reading this comment and I totally disagree. Especially the first clarinet is well tuned. I only wish that it sometimes could play its solos a little louder, however Blomstedt wanted it that way.

@@ursularissmann-telle4000 Sorry but no, the 1st clarinet is not well tuned. He’s pushing the tuning up - not much I know, but enough to make the balance wrong. If you can’t hear he’s high- well that’s to bad for you.. I can - I’ve heard him with piano to and is always the same problem. It is not proffessional
